Playing HD-DVD movies on Radeon X850

I have a Conenct 3d Radeon X850XT PE and I have PowerDVD Ultra with the Xbox360 HD-DVD Player. When I try to play the King Kong disc it comes with, I hear the audio just fine but the video is all garbage. I have it connected via VGA so the HDCP is not necessary and all updated drivers from ATI as well.

Does anyone else have this problem or is this card just too old now that it cant play HD-DVD movies? Any help would be appreciated.

Your video card is not HDCP ready.
Here are some of HDCP cards available.

VGA is not HDCP. Hook it up through HDMI/DVI and it will work.

and either way, you can still play HD protected Contect through the VGA, you dont HAVE to connect the output via DVI/HDMI.

so HDCP is not an issue here, its either the video card or software and I am just trying to rule out my video card so I dont have to buy one, but more and more its looking like it is the video card....

Umm.. no you can't. HDCP requires a digital path to the monitor, VGA won't work. HD-DVD discs that are protected requires HDCP to work correctly. Try installing the new AnyDVD HD beta and see if it works. That makes the HD-DVD appear unprotected so then it won't enforced the HDCP path.

HDCP shouldn't be a factor regarding VGA output. HD-DVD media currently allows analog output at native resolutions
since the ICT flag is not set. What am I missing?

yeah if hdcp was a must then it it wouldn't work on an xbox 360 either....

For all the people in this thread stating that it will not function over VGA at all at this time, please take your uninformed comments somewhere else.

As for the problem the OP is having, I'm having similar issues with PowerDVD and there recently was a post on Engadget regarding multiple claims to the BBB that their software does not function properly and something about requesting refunds. There are definitely issues with it.

I've got the same HD-DVD player you have but yet to use it on one of my rigs in which I
mainly use it with my xbox 360 with little use since there are not too many hd movies to my liking.

I have exactly the same setup as you, and the same results with garbage video but normal audio. I even tried removing the copy protection on an HD-DVD using AnyDVD but ended up with the same results. I agree it is either the video card or Power DVD Ultra that is the culprit, and not an HDCP issue. Did you ever figure out the problem on your system?

I headed over to BB and bought a video card think it was nvidia 7600 or something and stuck it in there with updated drivers and sure enough it played the encrypted and unencrypted HD-DVD movies just fine.... *sigh* ya know when I bought the x850xt it was top of the line, I was hoping it would last more than a year and a half before I needed to replace... BUT then again it still could be just an issue with ATI drivers or PowerDVD software and not the hardware. I ended up taking back the 7600 to BB and going for Nvidia's 8800GTS 640MB version as the Radeon X850XT was having problems with oblivion at 1920x1080 resolution with medium settings anyway so might as well upgrade (what can I say, I am impatient. Comes with youth, lol).
