Playing ME1 again

It's been like 6 years since I've played this and just had to say that even after all this time, this game is so good. The attention to details with everything is so fresh compared to all the recent games that I've been playing. The dialog options don't seem like just canned responses, all the conversations flow with reason.

The graphics are a bit dated, and it's unplayabe without vsync on.

Origin accepted my game key so I didn't have to hunt down all the patches. If it wasn't for this I probably wouldn't have bothered.

Yup, it's a masterpiece in my book (not a perfect game, just overall a must have). I'll still talk about it 50 years from now (provided I'm still alive at that point). It does look a bit dated now indeed, and I would lie if I said I wouldn't like a HD remaster of ME1, that would be sweet (not a remake, just a remaster, with higher polygon counts, better textures, maybe some new lightning/shadow effects and techniques unavailable in the UE3 engine back when they made it, and something like tessellation and I'd be more than happy). But yeah, superb timeless game.

I know some people didn't like the Mako in ME1 but I personally loved driving that thing around in the side quests.

Yeah it's a great game. Love the characters, love the setting, love the classic sci fi story. The main campaign is a bit short though, and much of the sidequests are sort of busywork that's annoying to play through when trying to complete the game. It's a "Ugh, right, I have to do that" feeling that I don't get with the sequels. Still, solid game.

The series looks great in 4K. Arguably better than current gen console games still even with the dated UE engine. Although the lack of controller support really kills it.

Everything is great about it, except Inventory management which was really annoying. Especially later in the game.

Don't forget bring down the sky add on. Probably the best mission in the game

Sadly as far as I can tell the origin version still requires that you download the installer manually but from a few we searches they removed the key requirement (after all it was a free add on for the pc).

I recently tried playing it again and the Mako was the one thing that made me stop.

Now I'm tempted to install it again to see how it looks in 4k...

Its funny that people give so much crap to the Mako. Star Control II is arguably one of the greatest games of its generation and even it had a cheesy lander with no real purpose other than a time sink.

I'm not saying that Mass Effect has the same impact on everyone, but I will say this; if the Mako is reason enough to stop playing, then Mass Effect really wasn't on your radar to begin with. The reason to play ME is the story. The ME sequels were efforts to "fix" the Mako by making the game more action oriented (they shooterfied it), and as a result they left behind the spirit of ME1.

I'll admit even with its shooter elements ME2 was a very strong game story wise, but it still doesn't touch ME1. The source code for ME3 can be deleted for all I care. The writing in that game doesn't even feel like ME. You can tell they went with a different writer for the dialogue.

Yes, I am acting like a game snob so I'll own up to that up front. As far as I'm concerned, the Mako could be taken out the game completely and it wouldn't change what Mass Effect is. That's the point I'm trying to make.

Problem though is that ME1 gets a lot of texture z-fighting on modern systems. The engine just wasn't very well coded.

Beat all the ME games twice on PC using an Xbox Gamepad. It is possible, just requires the time to make a profile. Once it works, it feels like a native console game in a way.

I do agree that is looks great in 4k. Never got a chance to actually play it on 4k though, just watched a friend.

ME1, 2 and 3 were all shooters. I remember the first husks I encountered in ME1... and I just shot them. My thoughts were literally "Wait, I thought this was an RPG?" lol. There was no engage, setup, loadscreen, instancing, turn timers, etc. Which is fine, but it's basically just shooting in real-time.

That said the problem with the Mako had nothing to do with anything 'spiritual'. It's because its controls were awful. It turned much too sharply and sensitively and the thing jumped and fell parallel to the surface it was on - that's not how gravity works. Plus it was super bouncy. Even if it had controlled perfectly it was pretty overpowered too, the enemy units never seemed dangerous to it at all.

I loved all three games and I loved the MACO. My favorite genres are RPG's and shooters. Only wish more characters from ME 1 and 2 had more of a role in ME 3. I imported my character into 2 and 3, which gave the three games a nice continuity.

Your post is all over the place. If ME1 is all about story, then the Mako is just a huge waste of time and completely out of place. I give it crap because as someone that likes to explore every nook and cranny, the Mako just makes it laborious.

Like I said, I already played the game and thoroughly enjoyed the story. I just don't have the patients or desire to deal with the Mako for a story that I already finished.

That's a solid list of games.

Minus dragon age, I agree

I didn't mind the mako the first time around, but something tells me I'd get tired of it if I went through ME1 again. The inventory management was also a pain. But the story was excellent.
I thought ME3 game play wise struck a good balance of not dropping loot so often but still keeping decent itemization.

For those struggling with the Mako when fighting the sandworms: Stay perfectly still. Don't drive around. Just shoot the sandworm when it surfaces and jet pack upwards in place to dodge its fire. Repeat until dead.

After getting used to it's low gravity-like handling, I liked Mako.

The Kodiak flying shuttle that replaced Mako in Mass Effect 2 was never fun to me.

I reinstalled it, I didn't like it on the 360 much, I always thought the game would be much better with a keyboard and mouse. Enjoying it so far, thanks.
