Playing online games with router

I've got a cable router and 2 machines on it - no problem playing games using it as a LAN. How do I allow people to see games I host when I'm behind my router. The IP mine shows does not show on computers external to the router. Tried getting IP address off dslreports but still couldn't be seen by others online to join me.:disgust:

You need to forward the ports used by the game to the computer that is running the game server.

If you provide us with more info such as game and router type, we may be able to help.

I am using a D-link router (DI-704) and playing RTS games (especially Galactic Battlegrounds). I'm wanting to host games directly (6 players in four different states - family thing) and no problem with cable modem directly into computer cause I can send them my IP and they have the game look for that IP address then join my game. With the router they don't see my game and so cannot join.

Like Minendo said you need to forward the correct ports that the game uses to communicate through the router to the INTERNAL IP address of the computer hosting the game. Then your family will be able to get through your firewall and connect to the game server. You might check on the Galactic Battlegrounds site to see if they have correct ports listed to get multiplayer to function through routers. I don't know what ports Galactic Battlegrounds uses.
