Playstation 2 or Xbox?

I've talked to friends who own either one and have their own recommendations... is there anyone here who has actually played a lot of both systems and has an opinion? Refrain from flaming each other, and please just post if you have a reason based in "fact."

As far as I can tell, for graphics xbox > ps2 most of the time. In terms of games, ps2 > xbox... probably the same goes for controllers and ergonomics. It looks like the cost of ownership for a ps2 is much higher than an xbox when you take into consideration memory cards.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Xbox. Better controllers. Better graphics. Better sound. Built in HD makes for vastly more options such as stored games, custom soundtracks and ha/\x0rIng!

Only downfall is limited games over PS2 and no EA games online support...which may change later this year.

In my house, My brother owns the PS2, and I own the Xbox, but we both play games on each system. He has 3 games for his PS2 (one was included as a bundle, but he really don't care much about). My Xbox on the other hand has about 25 games. I find myself playing the Xbox much more than his PS2. I havn't seen him play GT3 much since I got PGR2.

The only genre where PS2 beats the Xbox handsdown is in RPGs. Xbox is lacking in that department, though it has a few good ones out now (KOTOR, Morrowind), and a few good ones coming out soon (Sudeki, Fable).

I also believe Xbox has the better controller (I love the triggers). Plus Xbox Live is a piece of cake!

One of my big hang-ups is the Final Fantasy games... although the new one looks pretty lame, FFX-2 or whatever. It's like you're some teenie-bopper American Idol pop singers? *shrug* Maybe I just don't get it...

Are there games like that for xbox? Or am I just a loser for liking the FF games?

I have played all three and Id put Xbox first, and then its a toss up between the PS2 and GC for me. the GC has more fun party/group type games which get more play here at school, and the ps2 has more single layer and mature themed games. I just like the xbox cause it looks so much better than ps2 and has almost all the same games cept the rpg's

Because there really isn't a need? And it still is expensive, especially when you consider acessories and everything.

A gamecube costs $100, but you need to dump another $60+ in controllers and $20 in a memory card.
A PS2 runs $180 but you need to dump another $75 to get 3 more controllers and another $25 for a memory card
An Xbox runs $180 but you need to dump another $90 in controllers to get 4.

That's A LOT of money to dump on consoles. Plus you have the issue of a fsckload of cords and controllers to dick around with.

I have all 3. GC has about an inch of dust on it. PS2 has not been used for a while, and the Xbox hasn't been used since we got bored of DOA3, until the birth of Top Spin and Project Gotham 2. Now I'm running on 4 hours of sleep everyday because of Xbox Live.

i think it depends on what's most important to you. i had a ps2 for about 2 years, sold it, and then bought an xbox. although the ps2 has a very large number of games, i'm the type who only likes to play and buy the very highest rated games (not enough time even then), and when i was looking to sell the ps2 last year, there weren't any must-have games in the near horizon (GT4 and ICO2 were a ways away). i figured that by the time GT4 and ICO2 came out, the ps2 would have dropped in price to under $100 and i'd consider buying another one then (since i already have extra ps2 controllers and stuff which i've kept).

in the meantime, i picked up the xbox and had a blast playing halo, splinter cell (i know it's available for the ps2 but it's not quite as sharp), top spin, PGR2, and prince of persia (again, it's on the ps2 as well but not as sharp as the xbox). xbox live is a lot of fun as well.

that said, if you like RPGs, ps2 is definitely the way to go as it has so much more selection. if you absolutely love EA Sports games and like playing online, ps2 is currently the way to go. if you like watching DVDs and plan to use your console as a DVD player, the newer ps2 versions are the way to go (progressive scan dvd player and integrated IR receiver for the remote). the xbox for some reason doesn't have progressive scan for movies, although it features progressive scan for many games. plus, the xbox cannot play DVDs out of the box, whereas the ps2 can (although using the dual shock controller is clumsy for movies). but if none of the above apply to you, it's kind of a toss-up.

hope that helps!

Xbox has the best game lineup this year IMO.

Halo 2, Half Life 2, Doom 3, Ninja Gaiden, Starcraft: Ghost (on all systems but best on Xbox), Fable, Jade Empire (from the makers of KOTOR), Perfect Dark: Zero (not much known about this yet and if it'll come in 2004), Otogi 2, and many more I can't think of...these games are all very appealing to me.

If you go all out and equip each console with all the controllers and memory cards they need then it can be pricy if it's all bought at once. When I bought my cube I bought only 1 controller and 1 memory card (which cost me somewhere between $40-$50) and that held me over until I needed another memory card.

I just bought an Xbox and since it has the hard drive I only had to buy 1 controller for $30 and I was set (I'm not too keen on 3rd party stuff so I stuck with the Microsoft controller).

I was pretty happy with my cube (still am of course) but I'm a royal tight-wad so I try to buy as many games used as I possibly can. I went through 3 different EBGames in my area and each one only has a tiny section for the cube while the Xbox and PS2 dominate the entire store. So, since I had to have MechAssault and Crimson Skies I had to get an Xbox. I wasn't too thrilled about dropping $180 on another console but I figure in the long run it will be worth it since I'll have a much larger selection of used games to choose from.

If you haven't been to ebgames for their buy 2 get 1 free deal on used games you've just got to go (I think it ends on Saturday). Between the Xbox, Cube, and Gameboy SP I think I've bought 12 games so far and only spent ~$200. I know I've gone off the deep-end but I've got so many games now that I'll keep busy for the rest of the year (I may end up going back one last time to see if there's any other titles I can snag).

Good to see that I'm not the only one who is PGR2's b*tch.

I had all three systems, and recently sold the GC because once the core crop of games (Mario, Zelda, etc.) has been played... There's just nothing else.
The PS2 is an excellent system. If that has the games you are interested in, then you'll be very happy with a PS2.

But Microsoft really hit a grand slam with Xbox Live. It is an amazing implementation/integration of online play. Sure, the PS2 has some online capabilities, but it'll never approach what the Xbox has already accomplished.
Online play combined with the built in HD, excellent high definition implimentation, and phenominal 5.1DD surround sound make the Xbox my system of choice.

Oh yeah, the lineup that kami and others have pointed out is just icing on the cake.

I usually buy my games at blockbuster when they have their Buy 2 get 1 free sale.

You can pick up tons of games in the $12-$20 range there. Three games for $45 is a decent deal. In spring of '03 I bought Madden '03, Mechassault, and NHL Hitz '03 for $40 for the three of them.

Not bad.

I saw the news on the $99 pricing, but by September? Bah... that's over half a year!

It's a shame that xbox isn't boxed with Halo anymore, only Tetris and Clone Wars from what I saw at CC today. Hrmph.
