"Win a PS3 or Wii and help Toys For Teens

Here's all the details from CCR and BB:

Clear Channel Radio and Best Buy today announced the launch of an online auction featuring this holiday?s hottest videogame systems ? Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii. The total bid price for each console will benefit Toys for Teens, a program of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

Beginning today and running for the next twelve days, the four highest bidders during each hour of the online auction?s operation will get to purchase a PS3 or Nintendo Wii. More than 1,100 Clear Channel Radio local stations across the country will auction off two Playstation 3s and two Nintendo Wiis each hour for 12 hours a day, totaling 48 units per day. The online auction will run from 8:00 a.m. eastern time to 8:00 p.m. eastern time each day. In addition, 119 Clear Channel Radio stations will conduct live on-air auctions throughout the holiday season.

?Clear Channel Radio stations conduct unique and exciting programs to benefit local charitable causes all year long,? said Sanda Coyle, Senior Vice President, Strategic Marketing for Clear Channel Radio. ?But this holiday season, our stations are using the one-two punch of their on-air and online reach to help raise money for a very worthy charity and give consumers a chance to bid on this year?s hottest video game consoles.?

?We?re pleased to partner with Clear Channel Radio to Toys for Teens. Best Buy and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation created the Toys for Teens program six years ago to make the holidays brighter for older children too,? said Paula Prahl, vice president of Public Affairs, Best Buy. ?Together with our customers we?ve contributed $2 million to the cause so far, and this year we could substantially increase the contribution through this initiative.?

?The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation launched the Toys for Teens program to help older children ages 12 through 15,? said Bill Grein, VP of Marketing & Development, of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. ?We?d like to thank Best Buy, our exclusive corporate sponsor of Toys for Teens, and Clear Channel Radio for organizing this auction.?

Bidding for the Playstation 3 will start at $599.99; $249.99 for the Nintendo Wiis. Bidding will increase in minimum increments of $25 for the Playstation 3 and $10 for the Nintendo Wii. At the end of every hour of the online auction, the winning bidders will receive an email with a URL directing them to a check-out site. Auction winners will then have 48 hours to make their purchase; after that, the second highest bidder will be offered the game console.

Each winning bidder will receive a confirmation e-mail as proof of purchase, as well as tax donation information. Local distribution of game consoles will be handled by Best Buy.

Individuals interested in making cash donations to Toys for Teens may do so at BestBuy.com or at the register of their local Best Buy store. For more information, log onto your local Clear Channel Radio station Web site and click on the online auction promo box or tune in to your favorite local Clear Channel Radio station for information on how to participate. o Nintendo Wiis each hour for 12 hours a day, totaling 48 units per day. Only the amount over the cost of the product can be used as a write-off.

Not sure if this qualifies as a hot deal though...

how much is shipping? could be a better deal if some of the auctions are lower than ebay price gouging (and the extra $$$ goes to charity )

What kind of "Toys for Teens" are they talking about? Since it's a Bestbuy ran function i'm assuming electronics, ie video games. If that's the case, I would have to agree with CPA. Teens should be focusing more on their studies rather than video games. Sorry, i'm not trying to crap but I think there's charities out there that would benefit more from a function such as this.

Who cares if its the same price or more than ebay? On ebay 100% of the profit is going to some greedy bastard that had enough money to buy a console in the first place. With the auction 100% of the money goes to teens who couldn't afford anything. And no they aren't just getting video games. They also get bikes, footballs, nerf toys and other things to that nature. Video games aren't the only things teens play with today.

Hmm,
No guarantee of delivery by Christmas
If they don't promise to ship any time soon, you might as well buy the Wii locally, and make a donation to Child's Play instead.

. . . not that I'm biased or anything

Thanks for this find. I got one for 700 shipped. Not bad considering 600 plus tax at my local stores which never have any in stock anyways. Anyone know if there's a policy on defective systems?

I got a Wii for our 6-year old. I had sat outside of Bestbuy this morning for several hours only to miss out by 4 people (they only had 18). Then I stumbled over the auction at a local radio station site.

We'd been planning to give a decent chunk to charity this year for Christmas, so this seems like a win-win. I got the Wii for $520 with no additonal tax or shipping, I get a write-off for $270, Toys for Tots/Teens gets $520. Compared to giving $450 (and more today since it loks like today was the last shot for stores) to someone rolling it on eBay, I think it was worth it.

So the hot deal is that if you planned on giving to Charity and want a Wii or PS3, this rocks. The downside is that the chance of getting this at Christmas is near zero (6-10 business days from Best Buy), but I'll buy some games and accessories to put under the tree and rent a couple of PS2 games to tide him over.

As for the Toys for Teens, if you're 15 and have nothing, a teddy bear or toy truck means squat. A cool MP3 player, Nintendo DS or anything else can make all the difference in the world.
