As you read this Phil Harrison is standing in front of a packed auditorium at the Game Developers Conference unveiling what I think is a pretty damn cool new, free application for the Playstation 3.

Playstation Home is essentially a living world inside your console. It's probably a flawed analogy but think of it as Second Life meets the PS3.

The free service, which will go into beta this April and hit consoles this fall, will become a new menu item in the cross media bar.

When you select it you will be dropped into a virtual world peopled by life-like avatars. From what we saw during a press screening, customization of these avatars is incredibly flexible, allowing you to create something that looks as much like you as you would want.

Home starts you out in a central lobby. You use a virtual PSP in this world to access features, but can also just walk around. The main lobby we saw included dynamic advertising on billboards, games you could just walk up to and play, like bowling or pool and even a mini arcade that featured some cool little arcade titles.

You can communicate with others in the lobby by talking, typing, using motions or pre-written phrases.

After walking around inside this home lobby for a bit, Harrison jumped his avatar to his private apartment.

Brian Crecente

The apartment, and there are lots of different types, look very realistic and can be customized with real-world furniture, wallpaper, picture frames that show images from your harddrive, even televisions that stream your own original video content.

The idea, it seems, is that your apartment will become the nexus of your Playstation 3 experience. It is where you can listen to music, look at pictures, watch video, invite your friends over to talk and even go into multiplayer games together to play as a group.

"This could become your clan heaquarters," Harrison said. "From within home you can launch multiplayer games directly. You can then come back into home afterward and talk about it."

Next Harrison showed a more sophisticated apartment. This one had several levels, an outdoor deck and a much nicer design.

Home will also have other public spaces, like the Home Cinema, a sort of virtual movie theater complete with a large front lobby and separate screening rooms.

It's also possible for companies or publishers to create their own spaces. For instance Electronic Arts could create a space that shows off their current and upcoming games in a virtual world that looks more like a mall than a store.

I think this is going to be one of those features that people didn't realize that wanted until they get it. But I think I'll really have to experience it first hand to decide just how well it works. Brian Crecente

Sounds about right for Sony ... not coming up with anything new and copying ideas that already are out there.

Yeah, but it's Sony, and it's the PS3, and they're virtually GIVING it away - they're probably losing $150 on each avatar, so you should be happy they're producing enough pixels to cover the shortage!

Edit: reminds me of an old crappy Walkman/personal stereo/whatever that would have "PLAY" and "STOP" listed as features.

But it only sounds good to you because you have a PS3 and you've been begging for Sony to throw you a bone to make you feel good about the purchase. Let's face it. Those are not selling points imho.

God knows Sony needs something to boost PS3 sales. Their recent slew of PR has been nothing but a pure sh!tstorm.

Mii's are little cartoonish characters you create on the Wii to represent yourself in games like Wii Sports.

i'll see how well it plays out.
but sony can't come up with one original idea for once to save their own company. it's pretty sad. they think they got it by taking the best of both MS and Nintendo, well I say they should fix their current issues before starting another fire

they need their online system going like NOW to compete with MS, and better Sixaxis support in games. they touted every feature like the best thing since sliced bread only to see all these ideas realized the half-ass way. it's like there's too many things for them to focus on and thus losing on all ends.

Perhaps, but have you played the game? It is a great racer. It looks beautiful on 1080p and plays great.

Japanese excel at greatly improving other peoples' ideas.

Did I say ALL Japanese copy others? I just said the Japanese are good at improving others' ideas, including other Japanese's.

the big deal is sony can't come up with an original idea just for even once.
and everyone should head to kotaku to read up on how their PR guy antagonized the kotaku editors and tried to blackmail them, only to backtrack later. they threatened to sever all ties with them unless they retract the story about the rumor. it's called a rumor for a reason, whatever sony execs and PR heads are smokin these days, it must be some good stuff.

the only piece of good news and they decide to play it like an idiot against free publicity

Heck, I wasn't even referring to the game. I'm sure it's awesome. I'm referring to these 'zomg features!'.

I know this is a sad statement I'm about to make, and it should scary Sony since I'm sure I am not alone, but I honestly forgot all about the PS3 until I saw this thread today. I'm still trying to find a Wii.
