Why does it have to be "Halo what?" That's why you have friends and relatives...you buy one machine, they buy another and then borrow from each other. best of both worlds.

That's all well and good, but I want a release date. Also, link to this info?

ign.com. 2006 release date. No specific quarter given yet.

Analysts have said late spring for Japan and fall for N. America and Europe.

So all we are getting are renders?

Guess so. Makes sense since they are no where close to release.

Well, XBOX 360 ran their demos from apple G5s, i believe i read the demos during the PS3 conference were running on PS3 hardware.

Notice in this pic on the left of the machine, there are 3 little dots that makes that part look like a cover. I wonder if that recedes back up into the machine, to reveal the memory card slots and USB ports? No pics of that yet.

Yes but the developers worked it out in the end right? Some games look very impresive imo on the PS2. Sure they look better on the Xbox but it is newer technology. But at the end of the day if Sony does a 'Live' type of service that isn't complete BS it will do well.

Yeah, but this next generation of games with multi-threading and everything else is supposed to be way more difficult to program for than the current generation because of multi-threading, etc. I hope all three do well since all the competition can mean nothing but good things for us consumers.

Yes but all the next gen consoles will have multi threading so it'll be hard and a new learning experience for them. Hopefully this will be really good and they can get it done well.

Also some guy posted about the Unreal 3 engine being done in 'real time' and they had the head of Epic to vouch for the PS3. Saing it was 'easy to program for'. I'm sure if they can get the Unreal 3 engine running on it with limited time it shouldn't be that crazy to program for. But he could be talking utter BS though

Which makes sense since they are not close to release of the Xbox360. They used G5s which are the closest thing to the final specs. PS3 used cell hardware that is close to what their final specs should be.

My guess is it has to. The PS3 has 4 usb ports at the front, MS Duo, SD and CF at the front.

That's cause the Unreal team creates their own pretty damn good middleware tools. EA bought a development house specifically (rumored at least) for their middleware tools. That's why I'm saying this next-gen is going to be all about the middleware.

Ah, ya, I guess I kind of sounded like I didn't know. Surely that's what it is, but it's not apparent how it opens. It could just be hinged upwards, it could recede into the console once opened, and it even kind of looks like it could slide from left to right, either displaying the cd slot or the connections.

Another thing we haven't discussed, is how small this thing will be. Judging from the size of the cd slot, it couldn't stand no more than 10" to 12" tall. Looks like we're talking a size between the PS2 and the PS2 mini.

Microsoft will still win out here, sorry, end of discussion. Remember, this is Microsoft we're talking about. They invariably have some of the most talented programmers in the world on staff and will likely stop at nothing to win as evidenced by their guerilla advertising and launch tactics to date. Also remember that Microsoft did everything right so far because they will be launching their console before the end of this year. All this, "they leaked info too early..." stuff means nothing when they're literally 4-5 months away from launch. Sorry, but this Christmas season is going to be owned by Microsoft, hands down.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NVIDIA PRESENTS BREAKTHROUGH NEXT-GENERATION GRAPHICS AT SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT?S PLAYSTATION®3 PRESS CONFERENCE

SONY PICTURES STUDIOS?CULVER CITY, CA?MAY 16, 2005?NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) a worldwide leader in graphics and digital media processors, provided a first look at the powerful graphics architecture of PLAYSTATION®3 at a press conference held today by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). NVIDIA and SCE are jointly developing a new graphics processor for PLAYSTATION®3. Codenamed ?RSX,? the new processor will connect directly to Cell, the advanced microprocessor developed by IBM, Sony Group, and Toshiba.

?RSX is jointly developed by NVIDIA, the number one company in PC graphics, and SCE, the leader in computer entertainment,? said Ken Kutaragi, president and group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. ?This cutting-edge graphics processor will give freedom in graphics expression and accelerate the fusion of entertainment content.?

?PLAYSTATION 3 will be the most important computer entertainment and digital media platform of the decade,? added Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO, NVIDIA. ?The combination of Cell and RSX will enable the creation of next-generation real-time 3D imagery that will take your breath away.?

During the press conference, Mr. Huang demonstrated examples of graphics breakthroughs that will be available to future PLAYSTATION 3 developers and end-users. His presentation included real-time demos created by NVIDIA as well as a new demo developed by Epic Games. The demos illustrate how RSX will enable PLAYSTATION 3 games to realize stunning immersive and interactive environments, compelling and believable characters, and experiences beyond what was previously thought possible.

RSX will be the most sophisticated graphics processor ever built, representing 1500 person-years of investment. When combined with Cell, it will provide an astounding two teraflops of floating point horsepower. A measure of the extraordinary processing power of RSX compared to current-generation game consoles is the numbers of transistors it will contain: 300 million. This is more than the total number of transistors in both the central processing units and the graphics processing units of the three leading current-generation systems, combined.

RSX will be manufactured at Sony Group?s Nagasaki Fab2 as well as OTSS (joint fabrication facility of Toshiba and Sony).

Haven't all Metal Gear Solid games been exclusive to Sony at one point or another? I don't believe this for a second. It will be exclusive for about a year.

You are right.

(p.s. The X360 is the only console coming out this holiday season, so if they don't "own" it, something is wrong)
