what original ideas have MS and sony come out with? except for their online connectivity, which is basically "stolen" from the pc gaming scene, nothing really.

MS - hard drive, Xbox Live! service (taking it even further with Xbox360)
Sony - Dual Analogs, they popularized CD-based console gaming after many failed attempts

I'm not trying to get into a pissing match but every console brings something different to the table. I just don't buy Nintendo being the only one with 'great' ideas.

i can say xbox hdd and live! service is just taking a page from pc gaming, and dual analog is just adding another stick to the analog stick from nintendo (and how many games use that second stick as a crucial control stick? Rise to honor? Ape escape? Death by Degrees? not a lot if you ask me)

im not into fanboy pissing matches either. i own all 3 systems now - GC, XBOX And PS2. its just my opinion that i think nintendo always have ideas, not always great ones, but definitely creative and innovative. while the other companies simply "build on" other ideas.

dude every FPS uses dual analog, as does any 3D platformer. and if you want to go the "well that was taken from a PC gaming machine" page, you could say the following:

analog on N64 - came from PC joysticks.
virtual boy - came from virtual reality (as shown on lawn mower man movie)
etc.

everything can come from "somewhere" if you dig deep enough.

I imagine a couple of the gaming blog sites like Joystiq.com or Kotaku.com will have something. Live blogging mind you. Not a live feed or anything.

Xbox DID steal the spotlight. Everyone knew about the MTV thing. I didn't even know Sony had the PS3 at E3...in fact I don't care. Too late.

No it wont. Theres some much info coming out over the next week. Revolution, PS3, and Xbox 360 will share the spotlight.

Yep. The question now is, who uses E3 the best to get the most spotlight?

I don't think Sony popularized CD based gaming. They just had the first successful CD based system. The dual analogues isn't really innovative since it's on the same line as adding more buttons to a controller. The little analogue nub on the PSP is pretty innovative though. Also, just to nit-pick, Sony originally designed their CD based system for Nintendo.

boneheaded decision of the century to break off a partnership with sony, only to create the biggest competition they ever faced.

Hence the "after many failed attempts" part of the sentence. And yes, everyone knows that Sony originally designed the CD based system for Nintendo and then Nintendo turned them down in favor of their cartridge based system. Another Nintendo success story!

They had the first worldwide success with a cd based system. The NEC PC Engine CD/TurboDuo system in Japan was hugely successful and was around since 1990 I think. Not sure the exact date of the CD system's release.

That was the "official" reason why Nintendo turned down the CD based system. There were actually licensing issues and disagreements between the two companies that ended up breaking the joint venture.

In order to "popularize" something, it has to be successful to some degree. You can't say the 3DO or cd-i popularized cd-based gaming, because they didn't. The playstation did. However, I think it's a stupid arguement to say who popularized cd-based gaming, because it's a moot point. Even if it mattered who started the cd gaming revolution, that belongs to the PC.

As for dual-analog, I do think that's innovative. Just because it's a simple idea doesn't mean it isn't innovative.

Anywho, I respect your opinions, just throwing mine in there.
