Playstation 4 in development

It’d be an understatement to say Sony’s had a rough quarter and the news it had to report in its earnings call Thursday bore that out. But a small tidbit from the games unit report has piqued some interest about the next PlayStation.

Chief financial officer Masaru Kato said on the call that Sony’s development work for the next PlayStation and is incurring research and development costs for the console.

He said he could not discuss when the console would be released.

VentureBeat said the fact that Sony is looking at rising costs could indicate that it’s developing new chips.

While Nintendo is planning a new Wii for June, Kotaku reported last month that Sony and Microsoft aren’t expected to launch their next generation consoles until 2014. The PlayStation 3 came out in 2006.

While Sony projected a net loss of $3.1 billion, its Networked Products and Services division — which includes gaming — saw a $429 million profit.

Of course they're working on the new Playstation. Just like Nintendo is working on a new Wii and Microsoft is working on a new Xbox. They take years and years of brainstorming and development, I'm sure they've already been working on their new systems for a while.

Well we know there's a new Nintendo console coming for sure, and chances are that it will not be targeting the same audience as the PS4 and Xbox 720 (or whatever their going to be called).

It all depends on what you're using it for. I bought my PS3 primarily for Bluray playback, gaming was just a bonus. I also have a 1 year old Xbox 360 Slim collecting dust, PS3 is a much more solid design IMO. The amount of noise given off from the Xbox optical drive is ridiculous.

The Ps3 is a flop by any measure? Wtf??? Pass some crack? Obvouisly wasn't anywhere near as successful as the ps2 or psx, but far from a flop lol.

I'm sure vgzchartz isn't the most inaccurate, but using your logic the only successful system this generation is the Nintendo DS and Wii. If that is your approach, then I'd honestly rather play the flop that is the ps3 than the success that is wii.

Pretty much the same for me when I bought my PS3 back in very early 08. At the time, the PS3 was the most stable Blu-ray player on the market. The gaming capability was just a nice bonus for me.

Exactly. This is also one of the main reasons I've heard from PS3 owns for owning a PS3 "It plays blurays!". At its release, that was somewhat of a big deal as the price of bluray players was almost comparable to the price of a PS3.

Sony saw HUGE losses from this, posting something like a 1.9 billion dollars in losses in their gaming division.

Microsoft, on the other hand, had one of the more successful consoles out there. While both have sold around the same number of consoles (53 million for microsoft, 50 million for playstation), microsoft has had HUGE game sales, beating even the Wii in number of games sold per unit.

The fact that when the kinect was release, it sold over 8 million units in its first 60 days should show you how well the xbox 360 has done as a money maker and a gaming console.

Good riddance. I love my PS3, but the hardware development seems like a huge clusterfuck. By all accounts the original aim during PS3's development was to have 2 or 4 Cell CPUs doing everything including graphics. That obviously didn't work out too well (not surprising, since Nvidia and AMD have spent decades engineering chips & drivers specifically to render graphics really, really well). Not to mention, the initial PS3 was unveiled with 2 HDMI ports, 3 gigabit Ethernet ports, and 6 USB ports for some reason.

So, what we got was the PS3: a Cell CPU, which seems more suited for HPC rather than running game software, combined with a last-gen off-the-shelf GPU crippled with a 128-bit memory bus. Oh yeah and it has high-bandwith XDR memory, which would be perfect for a GPU, but only the CPU uses it. The GPU gets its own pool of GDDR3.

With Kutaragi gone, hopefully Sony will take a more pragmatic approach to their console development rather than designing all custom, experimental hardware.

I can tell you this though where I work (which will stay nameless) we sell game/systems etc..

The store hasn't sold a ps-3 in nearly 4 weeks....
Cant keep xbox in stock hardly though.

I know games are a matter of preference, but I think the ps3 betters the xbox in both quality and quantity of exclusives.

I'm sure I'm missing a lot of 360 titles as I don't own one, but what comes to mind follows. I don't consider games that are also available on the pc as exclusive. Although, at this point it seems like most multiplatform games will be released on the ps3, 360, and pc.

Hardly. Though it's in third place, it's nearly caught up to the 360. 50 million and 53 million units sold respectively. Both have sold double what the original Xbox did. People would hardly call it a flop.

Looks like they want BC or they probably would've went something else so I guess we can expect another NV GPU. Wonder if they'll use XDR2?
