Itd be an understatement to say Sonys had a rough quarter and the news it had to report in its earnings call Thursday bore that out. But a small tidbit from the games unit report has piqued some interest about the next PlayStation.
Chief financial officer Masaru Kato said on the call that Sonys development work for the next PlayStation and is incurring research and development costs for the console.
He said he could not discuss when the console would be released.
VentureBeat said the fact that Sony is looking at rising costs could indicate that its developing new chips.
While Nintendo is planning a new Wii for June, Kotaku reported last month that Sony and Microsoft arent expected to launch their next generation consoles until 2014. The PlayStation 3 came out in 2006.
While Sony projected a net loss of $3.1 billion, its Networked Products and Services division which includes gaming saw a $429 million profit.
