Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and NVIDIA Announce Joint GPU Development for SCEI's Next-Generation Computer Entertainment System

TOKYO and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 7 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) and NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA - News) today announced that the companies have been collaborating on bringing advanced graphics technology and computer entertainment technology to SCEI's highly anticipated next-generation computer entertainment system. Both companies are jointly developing a custom graphics processing unit (GPU) incorporating NVIDIA's next-generation GeForce(TM) and SCEI's system solutions for next-generation computer entertainment systems featuring the Cell* processor.

This collaboration is made under a broad, multi-year, royalty-bearing agreement. The powerful custom GPU will be the graphics and image processing foundation for a broad range of applications from computer entertainment to broadband applications. The agreement will encompass future Sony digital consumer electronics products.

This is a DP from the vid forum but figured it was pretty big news.

Sony's success will not be based on their architecture, but on their brand.

Sony's console designs are elegant and are capable of beautiful graphics, they are not designed with the developer in mind.

I assume you mean software developer, in which case I beg to differ. The main reason for the PS2's success is the fact that it has by far the largest software pool of any console.

The PS2 is HARD to develop for. Sure, it has a huge software pool, but developers have been complaining about it for years.

just because it has the largest software pool doesn't mean it is the easiest to code for!!! it has also been out for about 3-4 years longer than the XBOX and has all the PS1 games too....

Brand is irrelevent. Sega, 3DO, and Atari were all big brand names and couldn't succeed. The ONLY thing that matters with consoles is the developers and Sony has no more leverage with them than MSFT or Atari or Sega would.

The Playstation execs were just video game savvy. They outthought everybody else by pandering to the Korean and Japanese markets with the better smaller controller and the early RPGs and fighters. Getting the insurmountable lead in number of units shipped was enough to garner the major developers and high profile games.

It is said that developers still cannot harness the complete power of the PS2 archetecture. Writing code to affectivily use all of the 128 bits processors power is not an easy task in anyway shape or form.

I would think that would be more valid in the past...but geez its been 4 years. Dev tools are out, you got thing slike Renderware...I honestly doubt that raw assembly is being used for the Ps2 right now. maybe it is used to speed up some slow points, but beyond that I would think they don't have to sit there grinding their teeth trying to code for it.

Unlikely. ATi made an excellent GPU for the GameCube, and their R500-based GPUs for the XB2 and next Nintendo console will probably match or beat the PS3s capabilities at a lower cost.

Im not a console owner or user. I love the versitility of my PC and im not going to argue PC Vs. Console here, Im just stating my position.

In the PC market, I buy the best performance/stability at my given price point based usually soley on Anandtech Forums opinions. Ive remained loyal, I could say, with AMD through my K6-2, Slot A Athlon, Palo 1800+, T'bred B 1700+ and currently a Barton 2500+. For graphics cards, Ive been through a Voodoo Rush 2d/3d card. TNT1, Kyro2, Ti4400 and currently my 9800P.

In the real world, I dont think brands have as much influence over the average customer. Most people would agree that most people would buy Intel because of their lack of knowledge about AMD.

I believe that games drive the console market more than brands. Halo greatly influenced sales of the Xbox as Im sure certain "blockbuster games" such as FF7 influenced sales of Playstations.

I do realise there is a certain amount of game crossover but some of the greatest games are console-exclusive and to some people, 1 game can really influence their choice.
