please advise on external hdd

Hi

guys I need advise on a external hdd for backup and use as an extra drive (if possible Id like to mount it as a extra letter)
Im currently looking at a Maxtor One Touch versus a Simpletech or anything good in the $130-150 price range for a 120 external

please let me know what you guys think

I would say Maxtor simply because they are a good brand and I have had good experiences with their hardware. If the Simpletech has a hard drive from a good (major) brand you could get that but if it's their own model I would again choose the Maxtor model.

I have a combo simpletech 2.5".... I love it!

Disk inside was a travelstar 40GN 20Gb.... replaced quickly!

A vote for simpletech. Their implementation of firewire is quite good..... now I am just waiting for an enclosure using the Oxford 922....

how bout buying a external case and a drive? you can get a 160 gb samsung drive + case for $150

So you are extending a vote for a product you had to pay more money to modify because it came with a substandard drive originally?

a plus for the simple is firewire and usb while maxtor has only usb
I was thinking maxtor myself but I need firewire

the maxtor one touch has firewire and usb, i have one sitting right in front of me just got it about 30 min ago 200gb

yes the 200 and up have both, 120 dont

why Simple ? WD is cheaper

in my past experience, WDs i've owned have been pretty noisy -- the drive will be used for audio, so the quieter the better...

This is the best advice of the thread. I have three systems and all have at least 1 backup external HDD. I buy external cases - the best have both Firewire and USB 2 - and then I use any drive I want - including free leftovers from upgrades.

I get mine off the shelf locally at SWS Electronics, or Fry's Electronics up in Phoenix. Internet-wise I would start with NewEgg - they have many to choose from. Here's a sample:

Try Cooler Express. You can pick 3.5" or 5.25" enclosure, firewire or USB and pretty much any brand and size of HD you want.

I agree, thats a good way to go, but there are some positive things about a ready to use drive as well
like backup soft, a very good design and reability (Id say maxtor did a great job with the one touch series) and a very nice power management, my favorite

yeah the maxtor does look pretty nice -- unfortunately, i need firewire so it can talk to a mac that doesn't have USB2.0.

I got the pc version firewire model
as for mac they have a special on the mac version (check buy.com) and it comes with all the soft converted to mac format
I actually wanted to get the mac version due to its price and then adjust it for PC but decided not to risk it (I had a post about that right here)
