please gimme your opinion on getting a duron or t-bird

which duron or t-bird is the best one to get now with a buget of about $100 or so. and i do want to over clock it...to 1Ghz if possible. thanks much in advance.

there is usually always a "sweet spot" for processors. If you look on price watch.com its easy to see. Just look where $$/extra MHZ starts going up sharply then go back 50 or 100 MHZ. You also want to see which processors are overclocking well. www.overclockers.com has a good CPU database.

From what I read (not from my own experience, heaven knows I wish that'd be possible ), it does not really matter which Duron you get if you are going to overclock it. All Durons reach something like 900 - 1100 Mhz, depending on whether you're lucky or not. A 800 Mhz Duron hasn't got a higher chance of reaching the max than a 600 Mhz one.
I've never heard the same about Thunderbirds, however.

On the price, I agree with ravedave. Here in Germany, that sweet spot would be at 750 Mhz for Durons or at 900 Mhz for TBs. But that's probably different in the US.

For under a $100, get a duron week 36 or later, almost sure you'll hit 1gig. I would get the t-bird just to get the extra performance but duron is way good enough for most needs and its cheap as heck.

With a $100 budget, I would have to go with the Duron. The cheaper TBirds are clocked way lower than 1G and there is seems to be amuch slimmer chance of getting that.

Also, when buying, try to make sure you get a CPU that was made recently (week 30+).

How do you ensure that you get a recently made processor?

To get a recently made processor you can:

1) Ask the vendor about their product

2) Find out from others where they got their newer chips from

3) or get a Duron 800, since those are all newer.
