Please Help!! Asus K7V onboard sound is horrible!!

I have an Asus K7V MB and use the onboard AC97 sound. It worked fine at first but suddenly started to crackle and sound scratchy. Sometimes after the system has been shut down for a while it worked fine but shortly after it became crackly again. Lately it's just been crackly without clearing up for a second. I have tested the speakers and they work perfectly so that's not the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an A7V and AOpen 200 soundcard (I originally ordered the A7V expecting onboard sound but it arrived without) and the sound sometimes lags in games, though this went when I reloaded the drivers; then there started to be an awful EMI-type noise from the speakers when I went to click START or sometimes when browsing through folders. I moved the sound card away from the videocard, since it sounded like an EMI-type noise, and it was better, although I still can't use Norton Hardware checker on the sound because there is an awful noise and then a system freeze requiring restart. An awful lot of people are having problems with the A7V/VIA KT133 chipset - especially with NVidia GeForce graphics cards - mine's an Asus V6600 GeForce256. I'm wondering if there is an EMI problem with the A7V combined with the NVidia GeForce graphics - what's your card?

my graphics card is an ATI Rage Fury Maxx. I've already had a lot of problems with that thing and the K7V as well but i'm not sure if it's causing some other conflict with sound. The sound has also recently stopped working and when it does there is an extremely loud static noise. I have contacted the place where i got my cpu and they said it sounded like the sound card is screwed up so they would send me another one. I'm hoping that will fix the prob.

onboard sound isn't the best quality to begin with. make sure your mobo is clean. Dust has a nasty habit of making bad sound.
