Hi all,

I am a graduating medical student looking to apply for a residency position for the next several years. My biggest concern is being able to do residency in a location where my significant other will have a decent job market. He is in hardware and software engineering, and currently working in Silicon Valley, but he will move to be with me wherever I end up in residency, so it is very important how I apply. Can you guys help me come up with a list of other cities that are good for tech jobs? The more the better, as I need to apply to an abundance of programs in order to get a residency spot. Thanks!!

Seattle.

Good residency options here at UW/Harborview, Children's, Virginia Mason, Swedish. Tech sector you have Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing, Facebook recently opened engineering offices, Google has engineering offices, and many others plus startups that are actively recruiting and hiring engineers.

RTP.

you have excellent University hospitals (Duke, Chapel Hill, Wake Med (not a University hospital)) and RTP.

you both win (also fantastic place to raise the little ones)

also, Red Hat/Linux is based at Centennial Campus at NCSU, in Raleigh, as well as shit loads of other tech, engineering, biotech companies.

And this year, Time named Durham the "#1 place in the world to visit." lol--no idea why, though.

Pittsburgh is a pretty good for tech and medical. Also cost of living is pretty good here.

What would help is knowing what kind of tech he/she does. Is he/she a programmer or a sever/networking guru or hardware tech that does support for PCs.

If your partner does anything with databases such as oracle then they should have no problems getting a job in most cities. Banks, hospitals, insurance agencies are always looking for a good developer.

Central Texas if you can handle the heat...plenty of tech options in Austin and Scott & White hospitals is based here as well...

Vanderbilt.

The tech market here is not bad at the moment. Although software development might not be the most sought after thing. I have been approached a couple of times in the last month about cisco networking jobs. Although there are a lot of companies here in the medical information systems business so there could be a demand for developers.

Austin. If you really need a job and have any sort of Linux admin skills HostGator is always hiring, never mind the hundreds of other large and small tech companies around.

If he is really experienced (more than 6 years), then Cambridge, MA. There is a start up on every corner that needs engineers. MIT is always hiring, Microsoft NERD center is always doing something, Google keeps expanding and buying local companies, pretty much every defense company has a presence near Cambridge...the list goes on. Problem is, you need to be experienced. If he has less than 4 years, it is going to be tough for him here.

Ive heard Denver and DC are good tech areas. I'd bet that the poster that said Seattle is probably right also.

You can also look at areas that have big healthcare providers and universities. They typically have pretty substantial IT needs.

Make sure to compare cost of living in your calculations. Also, you may want to add in ease of travel.

it's not the easiest thing in the world to get out of texas - especially if you're driving.

Thanks for all the responses so far! I asked my boyfriend for some specifics about what he does, and this is what he said: He is mostly interested in working on image/video processing as well as computer vision technologies, perhaps in a start up. He has worked extensively with H.264 and implementing video codecs on DSPs. In the past, he has also had a few years of experience as a board designer and signal integrity engineer.

Hopefully that will help you guys narrow down what other cities are appropriate for me to look at. I have to apply to about 50 programs, so whatever other cities you can suggest, I'd very much appreciate!

I am sorry to hijack the thread but is the tech field worth going to in this economy?

I was thinking of pursing somewhere in the tech field.

Cambridge is calling his name...

The job he is doing is the job I want, but every single place I applied to wants at least 3 years experience doing it...

You should never let the economy dictate what you want to major in. Pick what you want to do. Otherwise, you will be miserable.

Agreed. Too many people go into medicine thinking they'll make it rich, and now that our pay is getting cut like crazy... I don't think they'll be too happy about their choice anymore...

Job security is what I worry about.
