I had this problem over the summer, but I solved it by moving back to my RESNET connection at school

But now that I'm back at home, I am having the same problem again. Here's my setup:

Win2k SP1
Zone Alarm
Best Data 56k PCI Winmodem

I've tried dialing up with Netzero and a local ISP that I just happen to have a username/password for Anyway, I can dial and logon ONCE through either ISP, but if I disconnect and try to logon again to the Net, it just hangs at "Verifying username and password" and doesn't go any further. It does this for both Netzero and the local ISP.

I tried logging off from Windows and logging back on, then dialing up again but I still get the same hang at "Verifying username and password."

The only solution is to do a FULL reboot of the system and then I can dial up ONCE and I am then back in the same situation.

I tried disabling ZoneAlarm and it still does it. I don't know what to do now. It's beginning to be a pain to have to reboot after every dialup session

I am using straight up Microsoft drivers that I downloaded from Microsoft's website. They are certified WHQL drivers for this Conextant based modem.

this happens with me too
I also have Win2K SP1 and Zonealarm
I dialup to MSN
and I have Motorola 56K Hardware modem.
Is this a driver problem or a setting in windows?

DUN SUCKS! I deal with crappy problems like that here at work all the time.. too many problems to list. We have salesmen that work remotely using DUN, and it's a ROYAL PITA all the time... problem after problem.

Gawd I wish we had a DSL or something setup for our remote users.

I pray for the day when DUN is GONE!!!

Either uninstall SP1, or use another ISP. ATT dialup had the same problem with version 6.0, but now fixed with version 6.1.

I think it could be that DUN just doesn't close properly. Did you check with ctrl-alt-del?

I can't uninstall SP1 b/c I chose the option to not backup original files. And the manufacturers drivers for this modem suck ass.

Hmmm, if DUN isn't closing properly, everything should be fine when I logoff and then log back on. But this in not the case. It requires a full reboot.

I'm not at school. I'm at home.

And I don't think that it's the modem. I don't remember having this problem before intalling SP1...

I only use the thing for a few weeks out of the year.

SP2 is currently in beta testing.. You can do a search on the forums to find a post about it.. Perhaps that will fix your problem.. Maybe shoot an e-mail off to Microsoft about it..

If you need a free ISP that works with Win2k/SP1, use: a)Juno b)bluelight.com.

Do you have "Save Password" on?
Have you tried just doing a "Close all program and log on as a different user" instead of a full reboot?

Beta mania is DUN wasn't closing or wasn't hanging up then he'd get a "device already in use" type of message.

Simple fix... don't disconnect
I've had this problem in the past before but I don't remember how I fixed it since it's been so long since I've used dial up... I'll let you know if it comes back to me tho

Try turning off "Save password"

or go into the properties for that dialup and goto the options tab and select "Bring up terminal window after connecting" and manually type in your UID and PW everytime.

Try using the initilazation string 'ATZ' before dialing - no ' - this will reset the modem. Go to:
Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
On the Modems tab, click the modem that you want to configure.
Click Properties. then click the Advanced tab.
In Extra initialization commands, type the commands that should be sent to the modem when it is initialized.

I doubt it will work, but if it does you'll be happy, so my 2cents

Well, that's a tough one. Some things you might try:

1) Check the DUN connection to make sure the only things checked are the TCP/IP protocol and "Enable Software Compression".

2) Uninstall the Internet Explorer to revert to a previous version. You can then go back to Windows Update and get it again. IE takes over everything and it's possible one of its DUN files was corrupted.

3) Uninstall ZoneAlarm. It's a useless program written by slimy programmers capitalizing on people's fears of the Internet. A weekly trip to Windows Update will make you invulnerable to Internet hackers anyway (provided you're not stupid enought to open email attachments.)

4) Try the modem in a nother system to emiminate that variable.

Tell that to my hallmate that got probed and groped to the point where a hacker got into his system and deleted all of his MP3's and lefts his D: drive in shambles.

You take risks with your computer, I won't do the same with mine With a broadband connection at school, I DON'T TAKE ANY CHANCES WITH MY DATA.

But on the other fronts, I'll check it out.
