Your biggest concern is creating suction in your mouth. No drinking from straws or smoking cigarettes.

It's just gauze...drink with it in, drink with it taken out, doesn't matter. Took you long enough to finally realize that you could just remove it, drink some water, and then reapply some new gauze.
