Please help! Losing display settings!

I'll try and keep this brief, but I am totally computer illiterate!

When I start my computer, I have red vertical lines on the monitor. It passes the 'windows' window and then tells me to re set my colour and screen size. I cancel that message and let it boot up and then change the settings and re-start. I have to do this any where between 3 - 20 times before the changes 'stick' and the computer works great with no lines.

Has anyone any idea why this could be happening. I have all the latest drivers, but can't tell you much about the PC, as it was built by a friend. I know I have a Gateway2000 monitor, Voodoo3 graphics card, 56K modem, 550 processor on an Iwill motherboard.

I am so desperate now, that the computer is about to be thrown out and I'll just buy another one.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated from this computer idiot

you might want to tell us which windows you're using (win95,95 osr2, 98, 98se, nt4, 2k...)

almost can promise you that it is bad ram on the videocard

Why would the problem suddenly occur? The card has been in the computer since Xmas with no problems and only started messing up a month ago. Is there anything I can do to fix it or do I have to waste more money on this stupid thing

So basically I have to go and buy another one?? I have a Voodoo3, what shall I get this time?? Any reccommendations?

Try the latest drivers from 3dfx first. These just came out a couple of days ago...not beta drivers, but full release drivers.
