Please help me! Major PC problem!!

Ok, I was playing a game and my computer locked up suddenly. Naturally I restarted my computer. Heres the problem - it just hangs when booting up, like when it's in dos still. It counts the ram and mhz and maybe a few seconds after that it will just hang. And what's even weirder it doesn't hang in the same spot every time. I'll leave my PC off for a few hours and it will get almost to the part where it asks me to choose OS's. I opened up my PC and it was kind of dusty I noticed...but could this be the problem? I blew off all the dust and it still does the same thing. It can't be a irq conflicting or anything because I didn't change anything..just restarted my computer after it locked up. Please help!!!

i thought maybe that was the problem...even though i've ran games much longer than that in much hotter conditions..i thought maybe artic silver was rubbing off? can it do that?? anyways i pressed harder on the heatsink i might have just cracked my cpu core cuz now it doesn't boot up at all...bleh..

What can I say? Take the HSF off and see if the core is still in one piece.... oh and how high were your ambient temps and CPU temps before?

um - i just took it off and i can't see any chips whatsoever..and it doesn't smell at all...maybe it's internal?? if it was another component failing wouldn't my pc just lock up at the same time every time instead of getting further sometimes and not at other times (getting farthest when I would leave my pc off for a while) my temps weren't high at all - maybe around 40c for cpu and 30c for ambient? they weren't high enough to cause dmg by any means...

actually i think it may be the video card...it started making some weird noises coming from the fan...so i took it out..blew on it a little bit, clean it a little bit...put it back in and now it's booting up now...but still locks up...i may have found the limiting factor here....

What kind of video card is that? When does it lock up? When playing games or just after you boot? Does the heatsink feel very hot? Do any error messages display?

i say strip the computer down and blow all the dust and dirt off each component and the case and the power supply. your power supply maybe over heating, but it could be another component that is really dirty and not making good contact anymore.

Now that i think about it i bet it is the RAM. i bet when the system starts to heat up to normal operational temperature one of the cells in the RAM is electrically bleeding into a good cell which is causing your lockup problem.

k...just eliminated everything...and found out it was the VIDEO CARD all along...it was a gf2 gts...bleh. This is the second gf2 gts i've fried...absolutely no oc'ing whatsoever on this thing even...what gives...

if u didn't overclock, it should under warrenty, possibly
