Hey all,

I just got my Athlon 64 2800+ (CG stepping) and DFI Lanparty UT NF250Gb board and put it together, and want to overclock, but have no clue what to do with all the options this board has. Only overclocking experience I have is clocking P4 1.6A to 2.13GHz, and that was done only with FSB.

Should I try to just up the FSB on this as well? How should I set the LDT/FSB and CPU/FSB settings? I have seen people get this upto 2.4GHz ~ 2.5GHz, and I would love to get mine up there.

Please let me know what setting I need to change, and what setting I can just leave at Auto.

Thanks a bunch!

I would leave the LDT/FSB to auto. Keep uping the FSB until it wont boot Windows and then lower the multiplier and keep raising the FSB. If you have good cooling you can raise the CPU Vid control and use the voltage multiplier on good cooling 1.65 is about as far as you want to go maybe 1.7. I currently have my 3000+ at a 267 FSB and a nine multiplier with the same board.

isolate then consolidate. Keeping LDT x HTT less than 1000.

What that means is test three parts of CPU and subsystem to find max speeds of each.. then combine them for some sort of optimal overclock.

1. Max FSB (don't really need to do this step with DFI)

-set multi to 6
-set mem to SPD and 100
-Crank FSB up until you fail or there abouts

that's your boards MAX FSB capable

2. Chip

- Set multi to 9 (it's max)
-Set vcore to 1.6 or 1.65
-Set mem to SPD and 100
-Raise FSB up to boards max or until you start failing prime

that's your chips max speed

3. Memory

-Set mem setting to 200 and low 2.5-3-3 10 1 T and 2.9V
-Set chips multi to 6 again
-Raise FSB up to boards max or until you start failing memtest86 test 5

That's your mem max

I'm sure you can fiqure out consolidate.

Ok, thanks to you guys, Computer Man, and especially Zebo's 3 step guide to overclocking, i think i might have a successful overclock. I am running Prime95 torture test right now, at the below motherboard settings:

HTT: 267
LDT/FSB: x3.0
CPU/FSB: x9.0
CPU volt: 1.5V

DRAM volt: 2.6V
Freq: 166(5/6)
CPC: disabled (2T)
2.5 - 3 - 3 - 7

According to SiSoft Sandra, my current speeds are:

CPU: 2.40 GHz
FSB/HTT: 2 x 801MHz (1602 MHz data rate)
RAM: 2 x 218MHz (436MHz data rate)

With memory down to 100(1/2), I could boot into windows all the way upto 285 HTT, but I couldn't get my memory to work at around 400Mhz...

at around 278 HTT, and Memory around 440, i think it was okay, but i had to raise the cpu voltage, and I don't feel comfortable raising the voltage to like 1.65, since I saw the temp go up a bit.

So for right now, I think 2.4GHz at 1.5V, and this "value" ram at almost 440MHz, will make me happy.......if everything is stable....hopefully Prime won't crap out.

Feel free to make suggestions if i did something wrong or stupid with ram timings and stuff.

Thanks again

Ok a problem....

Prime95 gave an error about 3.5 hours into it. It wasn't a calculation error, but it said something like "hardware failure detected".....

Do you think this is something to do with my cpu or ram? what does "hardware failure detected" usually mean? should i try upping the cpu voltage a little bit??

thanks again guys.

wow that's a cool 3 step guide ...

is it only for this mobo or do most mobo's have these settings? (leaning toward the chaintech vnf250)

I also had a few question ...
let me get this straight first: You could have the fsb/htt thing run at lets say 260 but have your memory run at a lower speed?

How come his setting @ 400mhz for the memory did not work but 440mhz worked

Thanks

The guide can be used for all mobo's. I believe the chaintec has all the options listed in the guide. The Lanparty just has more detailed tools.

First raise the vcore to 1.55V and run prime. If that doesn't work, lower vcore back to 1.5V and raise vdimm .1V until its stable.

Edit: Once you get it stable, I would try to get 1T timings on the ram by setting 3-3-3-10, 1T, and 2.8V (or 2.9V).

Ya the guide is a little short, sorry. BTW people should always quote memory in real speed..., not DDR not "quad pumped" or similar marketing terms. I think he means 200 mhz and 220mhz respectivly. Anyway what was happening is either his board could'nt handle 285Mhz Bus or hypertransport was too high (must stay below 1000Mhz which is the HTT x LDT setting) or his chip was clocked too high. Since Obviously if memory running at 220 mhz works 200 will all settings being equal.

To answer your Q's/

HTT is just FSB, same thing, some boards call it FSB some call it HTT. And yes, you can set your memory to lower speed by using the "mem setting".

The options are usually 200, 166, 133, 100 (more extensive on the DFI and a few others)

What this means is 1:1, .83:1, .665:1, and .5:1 respectivly with 1 being your HTT/FSB.

In your example you set 260Mhz and use say the 166 mem setting.. 260 x .83 = 215.8mhz your memory is running at.

you're not using CPC on (1T), why not? It's huge, like 10% in performance in A64's.

All I can suggest is you isolate and consolidate better, like running prime longer in each case. I usually only run it 20 min and even then back off all settings 3-5% after it passes, only because I would be up for weeks fine tweaking to the nearest stable mhz which is crazy since heat varies and time is valuable. Anyway after I backed off and combined all the "isolate" steps I then run prime overnight and it passes almost 100% of the time.

i'm starting to understand all this ... and i got my system setup now (a64 2800/chaintechvnf250)

only problem is that my hdd's partition isn't formatting (100gb fail to complete format) *fixed it
and my idle temps for stock is 45-47

I've got the stock hsf ... it's from ajigo? or something like that ... but it's not all copper like the amd instructions ... should i just not oc with this? kinda high temps no? Temp readings from bios.

Thanks for the reply to my questions zebo i appreciate it!

Slimbim - you all stable now? good luck
