Please help me isolate whether this is a RAM, power supply, CPU, or motherboard hardware problem, and tell me what the next steps I can take in order to figure this out.

For the past month or so I've had a lot of problems with my system stability. When playing PC games I eventually get crash to desktops with out of memory error prompts coming up. When I browse the web or use IM applications, the different windows/applications on my computer all eventually appear to turn blank, or muddle together. Akin to the effect one would expect caused by memory leakage. When I reboot my computer, these things stop occuring temporarily, and then reoccur again.

I called Corsair tech support because I'm using Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit. The tech support rep told me that errors reported by Memtest86 could stem from hardware problems with either the RAM, CPU, motherboard, or power supply. He verified that my RAM voltage settings were correct in my BIOS and that the motherboard is totally compatible with the RAM. He told me to test each RAM module in each slot, do a few passes with Memtest86, and see if the errors still happen. He told me that it is highly unlikely that both of the two RAM modules would be producing errors and if Memtest86 indicates errors both times with just one module installed, it's likely not a RAM problem that I have. He also told me that Memtest86 should be reporting zero errors if everything is in working order.

I'm also using a OCZ GameXStream 600W ATX12V 24PIN SLI Ready Active PFC ATX Power Supply 120MM Fan Black, ASUS P5W DH Deluxe ATX LGA775 975X DDR2 2PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 GBLAN Sound Motherboard, and Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.40GHZ 1066FSB 4MB Retail.

I ran Memtest86 and got the following results. I tried to illustrate the screen as best as I could by writing down what I saw with a pen and paper and then typing that out later. It appears that every time I run Memtest86, I get results that are identical to these ones. Regardless of whether I have one RAM module installed or both of the two RAM modules installed. And regardless of which of the slots on the motherboard that the RAM module(s) are installed into.

Usually having just 1 memtest error suggests bad memory and the easiest way to confirm that is with a whole different set.
Also you never told us if your running your memory at that the manufacture requires. So if its not set, set it manually and re-run memtest.

@ rob:
what you asked for is listed except the bios revision.

I'm looking at the boxes of my motherboard and CPU products right. Not sure if this is the place where it has that information or not, if not please tell me where I would find that information?

Motherboard is manufatured by Asus.

On my motherboard sticker is says:

Part No: 90-Mbb2X1-G0AAY

CPU is manufactured by Intel.

The CPU sticker says:

PROD CODE: BX80557E6600SL9S8

MM # 884980

FPO/BATCH #: L628A248

VERSION #: D63625-001

In reply to QuiksilverX1,does my memtest only indicate one error? I was under the impression that it indicated many more errors. I have absolutely no idea what the results given by memtest mean, or how to interpret them.

I believe the RAM is running at 800MHz at 4-4-4-12, which as far as I can tell from company documentation, is a safe speed that is normal for it to operate at.

Unfortunately I do not own any other RAM that is compatible with this motherboard to test things with. Nor do I have any way to borrow some.

I can see that it shows many more, I was justing saying just having 1 is bad enough.

In that documentation you should see somewhere in it giving safe operating voltages and depending on manufacture its usually between 1.8v and 2.2v. If you find it, I would access your system BIOS and manually set it to that voltage. As under-volting or over-volting memory can cause instability along with memtest errors.

umm, that's what i stated about the processor, thanks for not reading my post.
I do not see that ram he has on the list anywhere,TWINX XMS2 PC6400. I see XMS PC6400 "CM2X512A-6400" not what he has.
and that is 512MB. I think he has incompatible ram.

That is definitely not the RAM what I have. The RAM what I have is as I've stated.

Pretty sure it's compatible because I came to these very boards about a year ago just before buying all this hardware, and asked the people here/read their posts in other threads about what specific brands and hardware they would buy, then I picked from parts that they recommended, then I had them look it over to check for if it's all compatible together before I purchased it.

Dial back your RAM speeds to 5-5-5-15 or 5-5-5-18; do you still get memory errors?

With the new test, do you still get errors when testing just one of the two sticks?

XMS3 = DDR3
XMS2 = DDR2
CM = DDR1 & DDR2 Server Modules
VS = DDR1 & DDR2 Notebook and Value Select Modules
XMS = DDR1

In other words your looking for "TWIN2X2048-6400C4" not "XMS2TWIN2X2048-6400C4"

Which is listed as compatible.

I looked for any TWIN memory that was listed under XMS2, nada. I say he's got incompatible ram. if you think it's something else, please find it.

Navaros,
Do you have any other memory you can try (size doesn't matter, as long as it's DDR2)? It's possible but unlikely that you would have two bad ram chips at the same time. Trying a completely different memory chip will help determine whether it's a problem with the Corsair RAM or a problem with the memory slots/memory controller on the motherboard itself.

ahem, do try to read.

"DDR2-800 (DHX)" that is not XMS2, there are no PC 6400 XMS2 modules that are the size he has, the only one is a 512MB module.
like I said, if you can't see or do the research, don't ridicule someone that does.

Ahem, speak for yourself.
I already pointed out to you that XMS2 is not a "model number" it is Corsairs way of marketing the differences the memory modules.

As stated:
XMS3 = DDR3
XMS2 = DDR2
CM = DDR1 & DDR2 Server Modules
VS = DDR1 & DDR2 Notebook and Value Select Modules
XMS = DDR1

WHICH MEANS YOUR ONLY LOOKING FOR WHAT MATCHES UP WITH THIS!
TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12

(...and yes that is supposed to be in caps as I am trying to get it through your thick head so you shall understand it.)

If you cannot understand this very simple fact then you shouldn't be helping.

okay, seems you are good at nothing more than nitpicking, and not at trying to fix anything. figure out the issue then.

WTF Rob! Your the one who was babbling about how his memory wasn't compatible with his motherboard; which in the end your solution would have been for him to purchase compatible ram when it already is. Now if saving another person (remember the guy you told to buy a new PSU because you told him too because software readings of PSU voltages were inaccurate? Then you complained to me how I should be on at 24/7 to monitor threads because you gave him bad advice.) from having to spend money on something that doesn't need to be replaced is "Nitpicking" then thats utter insanity.

Also if you haven't noticed we have gave him more than enough information and things to try that it could fix the problem or give us more detailed look of what is going on. So I am waiting for the OP the post some feedback.

I HAD EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

please tell me you are using 1.86 version of the memtestx86. Not the 3.4 or 3.5verison. Apprently the older versions chokes on duel core systems.

hope it help.
