Please help me isolate whether this is a RAM, power supply, CPU, or motherboard hardware problem, and tell me what the next steps I can take in order to figure this out.
For the past month or so I've had a lot of problems with my system stability. When playing PC games I eventually get crash to desktops with out of memory error prompts coming up. When I browse the web or use IM applications, the different windows/applications on my computer all eventually appear to turn blank, or muddle together. Akin to the effect one would expect caused by memory leakage. When I reboot my computer, these things stop occuring temporarily, and then reoccur again.
I called Corsair tech support because I'm using Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit. The tech support rep told me that errors reported by Memtest86 could stem from hardware problems with either the RAM, CPU, motherboard, or power supply. He verified that my RAM voltage settings were correct in my BIOS and that the motherboard is totally compatible with the RAM. He told me to test each RAM module in each slot, do a few passes with Memtest86, and see if the errors still happen. He told me that it is highly unlikely that both of the two RAM modules would be producing errors and if Memtest86 indicates errors both times with just one module installed, it's likely not a RAM problem that I have. He also told me that Memtest86 should be reporting zero errors if everything is in working order.
I'm also using a OCZ GameXStream 600W ATX12V 24PIN SLI Ready Active PFC ATX Power Supply 120MM Fan Black, ASUS P5W DH Deluxe ATX LGA775 975X DDR2 2PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 GBLAN Sound Motherboard, and Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.40GHZ 1066FSB 4MB Retail.
I ran Memtest86 and got the following results. I tried to illustrate the screen as best as I could by writing down what I saw with a pen and paper and then typing that out later. It appears that every time I run Memtest86, I get results that are identical to these ones. Regardless of whether I have one RAM module installed or both of the two RAM modules installed. And regardless of which of the slots on the motherboard that the RAM module(s) are installed into.
