Please help me with my Northwood overclock! I cant get past 1.824 Ghz :(

Processor: 1.6Ghz Northwood. Made in Malaysia, FPO/Batch: L207139W

Powersupply: Enermax 350Watt.

Motherboard: ASUS P4S333, bios: 1004c (which also doesnt recognise my HP 9100 writer).

If I try to go past 1.824Ghz I get the voice error "System failed due to CPU over-clocking".

I tried disabling the audio in bios, it didnt help. I tried the VEN1 jumper to give me an extra 0.2V and it showed up as no difference in bios.

Can someone pleeease help me. I was hoping for 2.133Ghz

bump cause i'm thinking about getting the 1.6 northwood, but only because it's supposed to oc well. Actually i was looking into this board too.

maybe you just got a bad chip...i recently received a 1.8a from newegg that won't even go above 124fsb...won't boot at 125+

Have you possibly tried the manual "wire trick" in case voltage controls are messed up on the board???

I haven't used the voice thing yet, and haven't had the cpu fail to boot at any speed yet...I only stopped cause I got the 1.8a to post at 139 and run sandra benches but it couldn't last an hour doing prime95..most all of my voltage upgrades have been due to prime95 instability...133fsb got an error at 3hours at 1.625....bumped it to 1.65 and it ran nonstop...


changing the jumper on the ven1 doesn't show up in the bios at all...You need to figure what it is or use the asus -probe to tell you...It has been generally .1v for me....

Im not sure what this "wire trick" is? URL please?

Also I changed voltage right up to 1.7v, went into windows and confirmed it with ASUS Probe then restarted and upped my system bus. It made no difference

Are you positive that is a Northwood?? 1.6-->1.8G sounds like a regular P4 to me.

If you are trying to inch your way up to 133MHz FSB and it won't go then it is probably your PCI/AGP cards that are giving you trouble. If you are certain that it is a 1.6A then try going straight to 133MHz FSB in one blow....that way everything is running in spec.

Also, what kind of RAM are you using? From your signature it looks like you have PC2700, which is fine of course, but if you are by any chance using PC2100 instead then that could also be the problem.

Yeah im positive. I have confirmed it with three programs, the chip, the box, the bios

Ive tried inching my way and going to 133fsb in one hit. It doesnt matter what settings I use, jumpers or different mem ratios's it just wont boot at 133fsb :|

Did you install the heatsink properly? Did you remount and reseat the heatsink? Did you try some thermal paste?

Are you sure you do not have the memory settings set to high? Be sure to use a 1:1 memory multiplier (100MHz memory setting) when you move to 133FSB.

It's more likely that your P4S333 is bad...than it is that your 1.6A can't hit 2.1GHz. If you accidentally damaged a capacitor or trace(s) on the motherboard, that could prevent you from hitting 133FSB.

Yeah, if the CPU voltage jumper doesn't work then that sounds like you got a lemon. But RMAing a bad motherboard is such a PITA...

Try unplugging all drives, USB devices, and PCI cards and booting with a minimal configuration (mb, CPU, RAM, video card). Same problem?

How about your voltage readings in BIOS? What kind of signal are you getting from that Enermax power supply? It's a long shot but maybe it is dying, you never know.

Yes, make sure your memory multiplier is set at 1:1. As first, I wasn't able to boot into Windows when it was set at "Auto".

Yea i really dont think chips can not oc well ... its mostly the hardware ... the memory timing is a big deal, and you should get to 2.1ish with stock voltage. Dunno what else to say.....

Try setting everything in the Hardware Monitor page in BIOS to "Ignore".

I checked my heatsink and it was fine. I also got rid of the thermal pad and applied thermal paste.

I always used the 1:1 ratio when I tried to overclock.

I also think it has to be my motherboard, the chip runs cool.

Yeah I tried that, unfortunately thats just for errors after bios has posted (e.g. no keyboard). And since my machine didnt post it didnt do alot

It?s Probably Your ENERMAX,
Theses P4?s are like VAMPIRES. I got the same PS as you do. After 2 weeks of running @ 2.136 , slowly my overclocks became less and less. Now I can?t even get a video signal when powered on with hard drives hooked up. However, unplug the drives and it cycles normally to bios screen.
Once in the BIOS, my +12 volts are @ +10.23.
Tried a friend Antec 400 and booted right up. Then I was able to overclock to 2.4 from my previos high of 2.136 .
Ordered meself a 500 Antec

The only way to find the problem is to have ineterchangable parts.
Its a good thing I have friends who also have Northwood setups that we can play with.

Like he was having problems all day long with his setup and who would have thought that its his 512mb DDR that was the problem.

My advice is to find someone else with a Northwood setup and ineterchange some parts and see what the excat problem is.
Hard to believe that a Northwood can't go beyond 1.824, your problem has to lie somewhere else.
