From my experience, it usually means the version of Nero in question is made for a specific brand of burner (ie, not the brand of burner you have), or you just need to get a newer version that supports/recognizes your burner, which would probably be Nero 6 Ultra.

Did your copy of Nero come with one of the burners? If so it's probably locked to just that burner. Go to the nero website and pay them $20 to upgrade to the full version of Nero.

Before that, or if you have the full Nero already, you probably need to download the latest update /patch

Do you have VIA Hyperion 4 in 1 drivers installed?

I had similar problems until I removed the Hyperion package.

I rebuilt a win2k system from parts and put my plextor 24X in. I had two problems when I did that. 1st problem, ASPI drivers... get the latest ones from adaptec. 2nd problem, Nero 5.0 wasn't supporting the drive - the demo of 6.0 did though so I invested in a copy. ... of course, if you can write dvdr but not cd-r... that's just odd.

Make sure the burner is set as master, dma is enabled. Are the dvdrw and cdrw on same ide channel?

the master-settings has not changed from the time that it was working properly, both are on the same channel, i think DMA is enabled. here is a pic...

It looks to me that both drives on the secondary channel are in PIO mode not any DMA mode. Since you're probably running the hard drive on the Primary, I'd say you're problem with the slow burn time is that.

Try doing what Microsoft suggests

or maybe getting an IDE driver update.

is that XP? In XP if you ever read a CD that had problems reading XP sets the mode to PIO to try to solve the problem but then no matter what you do it will stay in PIO unless you delete the Secondary controler and then have XP find it again. Then click on DMA and it will change out of PIO mode and that should solve your burning slow problem.

hey, i tried uninstalling and installing the secondary controller.
device 0 (the cdrw) went to DMA mode, while device 1 (dvd-rw) is still in PIO mode
this helped time a bit as i was able to burn a 800 mb cd in about 3 minutes but is the DVD-RW supposed to in PIO?
also, in my computer, both drives are detected as CD-drives and not RW's, what is that about?
lastly, i'm still not able to burn cd to cd, it errors immediatly. i have a feeling the dvdrw is supposed to be in DMA as well cuz i get the errors with the dvdrw is the source drive

thanx

Burners should always be in UltraDMA mode. Can you split them up, maybe put one as a slave to your hard drive? Otherwise try reversing their master/slave settings.

the CDRW is in UDMA mode, i did that by taking Dennis Travis's advice and unistalling, then reinstalling it again, that make the CDRW go into UDMA mode. the DVDRW still is in PIO. should i try to uninstall and install the controller again?

I vote for reversing their master/slave settings and then uninstall/reinstall the controller they're on. Good luck!

mechBgon, i did what you said. i put the hdd as master and the dvdrw as slave on the primary. AND it worked, all drives are in DMA mode and no more errors, the problem is that it caused a mess in my case. anyway to keep the cdrw/dvdrw on the same channel and have them in dma mode? thanx

What I meant to say was that you could try putting both optical drives on one IDE cable, but flip their Master/Slave roles and then uninstall/reinstall their controller and see what happened. Worth a try, anyway. I know what you mean about cables and mess... LOL, I remember my original Adaptec Ultra160 cable, which was like the computer equivalent of a small intestine! No force on Earth had the power to make that ~48" cable look the least bit tidy!

lol, i see what your saying now. well, i think it'll keep it this way cuz i dont want to risk it not working. sometime in the near future i'll try to put them back on the same controller or just get a server tower, thanx a lot for your help all (esp mechBgon)
