I was loggin off of Win2K (from my admin account) and I get an error along the lines of "pagesile.sys missing or..". Great I think, and then the system hangs. What to do? I reboot. Can/'t boot: "Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or currupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced".

I can't do a repair from the CD, can't find a WINNT install. Repair disk doesn't help, I didn't make one. I even tried making on manually by moving the hard drive to my other Win2K maching and copying the install.log (or whatver it is on there) to another repair disk.

A KB article says to change to system32\config and play with system.* files (and the main system file). Those muct be the "hive" or main registry? I have none of them, no backup in my repair folder either. No regback. I have been procrastinating and have not made a ghost backup. I did manage to have CHKDSK run on the drive, about 1000 files were lost total. 200 or so were deleted by CHKDSK, and 800 were in directories that had to be moved to a found.000 folder (I managed to figure out where they go an move them, but no registry ("system&quot files.

Am I completely hosed?

Yeah I know what to do if the system (OS) is trashed, I need to know if I have any chance of getting it running again without loosing all my settings in the registry. You think I need a reinstall, so you vote trashed, eh? Does the /config/system file store it all, or just hardware, or what?

I'm formatting a HD to store some backups and a Ghost image of what's left, so some definitive answers (despite my usually less than completely thorough descriptions) would be appreciated.. quickly?

you can reinstall w2k and not format the drive. Just leave it as is when it prompts you. You shouldn't lose your data. You should back up your data and then do a reformat install. I have two hard drives for this purpose. System crashes, then just re-install because data is on the other hard drive.
