Please HELP w/ RAS

I just installed RAS on a BDC. Dialing in from win98se laptop. Everything goes good, except I cant get authinticated on the network.

I can not even ping the PDC. I can ping the BDC but that is it. I have tried creating a LMhost file but that does not seem to help.

Any ideas anyone??? I sure could use them.

Couple of things you left out of your message. I'll assume your using Windows NT 4.0 with the lastest service packs and you have been able to dial in to the NT server and have been properly logged in. The question here is do you have the NT server setup to assign the IP address to your laptop (DHCP server setup or present on your network)? Maybe you just need to setup TCP/IP on your laptop. I would assume this would be your problem but run WINIPCFG on your laptop to see what your getting for a IP, GATEWAY and DNS number. Another thought, I think with RAS (don't work with it much anymore) that you need to select the protocol (in this case TCP/IP) for the COM port that is setup for RAS.

I believe you need NT server not workstation version. The workstation version RAS does not support TCP/IP.

nt workstation supports ras. Not to sound like a jerk, but i dont know where you came up with that. He is using windows NT server, he stated taht he put ras on a bdc (backup domain controller). He is also using dial up networking in win98 which supports tcp-ip.

Yes, this is win nt 4 sp5. I believe I have all the network settings correct on the laptop because I can make the connection to the RAS server. Just once I get there I cant access any network computers. The RAS doesnt even show up on the Network Neighborhood. I have the option selected to Connect to the entire network in the RAS settings. Once logged on I can ping the RAS but that is it and only by ip, not by name.

Making the workgroup of the RAS client PC the same as the domain is a good idea and helps with resolution. Didnt sound like this was the case since you could not ping but thought I would throw that in there for future use or is you do have any name resolution problems later on. Hosts file as well if there is only a small number of PC's to concern yourself with. Glad you got it working.

Turn on logon validation and name your domain in Client for MS networks?
