[UPDATE]
I have an i7-920 machine with a super motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2959#ov
The CPU support list mentions several Xeons, but does NOT list the line that includes the X5650.
It does mention this on the front page of the link:
Supports new generation Intel 32nm 6-core processors
Supports the newest Intel® Core™ i7 processors in socket LGA1366 with QPI 6.4 GT/s
The Xeon X5650 seems to fit the description but is not in the CPU support list. ARK: http://ark.intel.com/products/47922/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5650-12M-Cache-2_66-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI
I need to be nearly certain it'll work before potentially wasting $100 on something I'm then stuck with.
