I get Win2k locking up just running IE 5.5 while browsing. I've tried re-installing the OS but it still does it. I also tried disabling ACPI support during set-up and running as a Standard PC. Still locks up and nothing is overclocked. Here is a breakdown of the system...

Intel P3 733MHz
Asus P3V4X Motherboard
128MB Generic PC133 SDRAM
3dfx Voodoo3 3000 AGP
Maxtor 15GB IDE Hard Drive
Toshiba SD-M1212 DVD CD-ROM
Sound Blaster Live Sound Card
D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 Adapter

According to WCPUID
- 2x AGP
- fast writes - disabled
- side band addressing - enabled

OS: Windows 2000 Pro (SP2)
Windows 2000 Compatibility update (March 2001 - release 6)
VIA 4in1 Service Pack 4.29
3Dfx 1.03 WHQL Windows 2000 Display Drivers
Sound Blaster Live! Drivers update (00-07-11) SBLW-2KDRV-W1-US
DirectX 8.0a for Windows 2000
Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack to get 128-bit security

Thanks for your help, Olias

I found newer drivers for my NIC. See how this goes but I noticed my NIC shares IRQ5 with the VIA USB Universal Host Controller. Would this get reassigned if I were to move it to a different PCI slot?

TIA, Olias

Pleeease Guys, I need help with this box. This time it froze while scrolling a web page. I have a Logitech 2 button PS2 wheel mouse using the standard MS drivers. Sample rate 100 reports/second with an input buffer length of 100 packets and fast initialization selected. Any ideas what the culprit is?

Thanks, Oli

Dare I ask why you're using the standard M$ drivers? I'd suggest you try out the Logitech drivers for your pointer. I don't see why you haven't tried it. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip but can you tell me why reducing my temporary Internet file folder will help? If I was told that turning a Windows box North-South could improve stability, I think I would need a technical explanation.

Thanks again, Oli

Perhapse the next time that you decided for format and reinstall W2k you could just use IE5.0 / 5.01 instead of 5.5?

I had IE5.0 / 5.01 and it did the same thing. 5.5 was an atempt to eliminate the lock-ups.

This may be either a power supply issue or a cooling issue. if you already have an aftermarket CPU fan (i recommend www.3dfxcool.com), get a case fan or 3. I was just dealing with an issue like this but it was for an athlon. it was fixed by buying a new motherboard, but I have your motherboard and my system works fine try flashing the bios. while your at that try flashing EVERYTHING check how much power your power supply puts out. you may have a lot of devices inside that are draining power. you should have a 300 for good measure.

email me npowell@ucla.edu if you need further assistance.

Sorry that I left this hardware out in the original post but the CPU never goes above 38C.

- AOpen HX45A w/fan case mod
- Antec PP303X 300W PS (rated #1 for stability by AnandTech)
- Golden Orb SECC2 HSF

Tried all of the above and it still locked up while browsing. I think I will swap out the NIC and if that doesn't work, try a new video card.
