please help!!!!

i am a newbie to this forum.i have joined it cause i have a problem.i just bought a xfx ge force 6600 gt. the card runs fine for games like doom 3, half-life 2, far cry,etc. but for games like nfs underground, undreground 2, the game sometimes crashes. a blue screen appears .the message reads like this:"the display driver was unable to complete a drawing operation. the device driver got stuck in an infinite loop." i have updated the driver and installed nvidia forceware 71.89 but the problem persists.
My system configuration is: AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 256 mb ram, msi rs480 mobo,windows xp pro service pack 1. is this a hardware problem? may i fix it without contacting my vendor? i am asking this because for other games the card performs strongly? pls help!!! thanking u in advance for ur suggestions. i am waiting.

You may want to do a driver cleaning. Ever used Driver Cleaner? If not here is the general procedure:

1. Download Driver Cleaner and install.
2. Remove the current drivers using the Control Panel->Add Remove Programs applet.
3. Reboot and go into safe mode (to get to safe mode hit F8 during the boot process on the screen after the hard drives and memory/CPU are shown, the same screen that is right before the Windows loading bar comes up with a black screen). Then select Safe Mode from the menu.
4. In safe mode run Driver Cleaner selecting the nVidia drivers option (only display drivers, if there is something listed as nVidia IDE or something else do not uninstall, you simply want to select the nVidia option).
5. Reboot after DC indicates that is finished cleaning.
6. Disable any virus, spyware, etc. scanning software as you install the nVidia drivers again.
7. Once installation is finished reboot and see if it fixed your problems.

If this did not solve it then there are a few things you may want to consider:
1. The latest drivers have issues with the games you are trying to play.
2. You may have to install an older version for now until a new driver is released that may fix your problems.

Thx 4 ur suggestions. I did exactly what u advised and then installed Painkiller. Well, the same prob occurred. THe game crashed and a blue screen appeared giving the same error message. What shoukd i do next?Are u sure its not a hardware problem? Pls reply.

256 mb ram

I hope that's a typo.

PK struggled with 512MB on my system. 256MB may not be enough. When I went to 1 gig of ram the diiference in PK was huge. I benched PK, D3 and Far Cry with 512MB vs 1 gig. Performance increase in D3 was negligeable (good coding I guess), substantial in FC, and huge in PK. I benched for load times, reload (like when you get fragged and must reload the level) and general movement around in-game menu's.

What's your AGP aperature set to? With 256MB of ram, your AGP aperature may be hitting on your system ram, leaving even less for use.

Could also run Memtest to check ram. But if you've got only 256MB of system ram, I think that's too little for PK.

Thx 4 ur replies. Yeah DOOM 3 ran fine but the loading time of FARCRY made me sleepy.My AGP aperture is set to 64 mb(by default). Just hope its not a hardware problem. Any more suggestions?

These types of errors indicate that the operating system has determined that the graphics driver was taking too long for an operation to complete and that the driver appears to have stopped responding.

It's entirely possibly that your computer was doing a big swap file operation and your video card timed out.

Get more RAM (you need it, anyway).

I found another person who got the same error, here's their system specs:

amd 1800+
256 ram
winxp
geforce4 ti4200 64

I'm seeing a trend here.
