Yeah, I sort of have a feeling that the professional description in the title, means it for professional use and not meant to be put in a rig for gaming and music listening.

looks like it has built-in dsp effects (e.g. reverb). if they're quality effects, it isn't that unheard of. a quality rackmount unit for one effect could cost a couple thousand easily.

You can run three in parallel to. The 48/96 channel mixer w/ external sources is prob what's making it cost so much. Essentially it's the internals of a sound board slapped onto a PCI bus

Holy crap, that thing's huge. Take a look at this, that's a PCI slot at its base, and I think it may very well be bigger than any enthusiast video card out there.

Saying what you linked to is a sound card is like saying a sound board is an amp. It's a level above, both in quality and functionality.
