Okay, so I am finishing a new computer build with an am2 x2 3800 and a x1900xt running off a seasonic 430W psu.

I currently have an APC ES 650 ups that says it's rated for a 390W power output. Is this going to be a problem?

I know my computer probably won't be drawing that much, but I will also have a 20" LCD and speakers plugged in as well.

I'm also gonna take a guess that my TV shouldn't be plugged into it eh? I mean, I usually have my computer and TV on at the same time. What do ya think?

Edit for neatness

Typical Backup Time
at Half Load 15.4 minutes (195 Watts) Typical Backup Time
at Full Load 4.2 minutes (390 Watts)

Exactly what it says... I have a very similar x2 3800 with 20" lcd.. i'm drawing around 250w (3 optical + 3 hdd)

So you'll get around 10-12 min of run time...

Edit: also similar or same PSU.. forgot if mine was 480 or 430.. but I do have a lower video card..

What are you preparing for here? Brief brownouts or real outages? If it's a brownout, there's no point in plugging the other stuff into the UPS, because they'll come right back up anyway. So a good surge protector should be sufficient for the other equipment. If you actually want to be able to operate through a real power outage, you're going to need a much bigger UPS than that. I have the ES 750 hooked up to my server, router, and modem (which, together, pull much less power than your PC by itself) and it only gives me 25 minutes of power. On your UPS, I doubt you'll get more than 15 minutes for the PC alone. If you hook up other things, you'll not only be using more power, but the efficiency will go down as well. So that would leave you with even less time. It sounds like you're really interested in a generator of some sort, not just a UPS.

you won't be able to operate through a power outage.. i mean if you're in the NYC 10 day power outage, theres no ups for that... he's probably using it so he can shutdown and not lose data... 10 min for shutdown is good...

I didn't really buy this thing for the battery, but for the protection from spikes, surges, etc. Only my computer is plugged into the battery side of the ups. TV is plugged into surge protecter side.

The battery is just a perk. I'll at the very least have 5mins to shutdown if I need to.

From the replies you both have given I am assuming the max output (390W) is battery only? If so then I should be fine to go over a 390W draw from the power outlett in my wall? Or am I wrong here?

on the apc 1500 i have, theres a warning sensor on load.. so if it's too high, itll annoying beep at you..

this one doesn't seem to have the load warning... it just means over 390 you have less than 4 min of backup time

I use a 500 VA, but not for working through a power drain. I like having so if the power does go bye bye then I have time to save my work and shut everything down right.

Hate loosing work!!!
