Okay gang, I loaded some app software for my digital camera. Additionally, I tried loading Adobe Photodeluxe 1.0... the autorun would lock up... Tried to load from run...couldn't get past browse before locking up... finally tried through explore (WINDOW button + E) and would also lock up... So I bailed on trying to load it. Now I get this ticking sound (the sound when you click to start an application) except it doesn't stop ticking... 21 times every minute!!

Task manager shows "Explorer" always on, though there is no app open... The only way I get it to stop is to press ctrl+alt+del (explorer shows open at the top) and hit cancel... the sound goes away. If I open explorer via start and then shortcut I don't get the sound... (task manager shows "Exploring C..." AND "Explorer" as tasks open. But no sound. As soon as I hit Windows Button+E we start ticking again... If I reboot I get the ticking again....

PLEASE!!!! make the ticking stop!!!! (and yes I am a Anandtech subscriber...)

Just wondering if you have tried reinstalling the drivers for your soundcard as of yet? That would be the first thing that I would try. Could be that the drivers that were loaded for your camera have changed some interesting, to say the least, settings in your machine. Start there and see how it goes.

Been heavy into digital photography now for over 5 years . . . am on my 4th camera getting ready for number 5. In that time I have "been there and done that" on most of these problems and have learned some good lessons.

1. Avoid installing or using "camera software."
2. Avoid connecting the camera to the computer for file transfers.
3. Get a media reader attached to your computer.
4. Use standard image processing software (PhotoShop, PhotoPaint, PSP, HiJaak, Micrografx, etc.).
5. Do not format your camera media in a computer's reader.
6. Put your photo "albums" on CDR.

A registry restore to an earlier date can be done with ME, 2K, and XP, unless you have installed software such as "GoBack." The repeated clicking can occur when the sound being played goes into a loop for some reason. It is a corruption.

Also suggest turning Autorun off. It is best to be in control of when things happen so that you can avoid conflicts. Leaving a CD in your drive speeds up booting if your CD drive is on the BIOS boot list, and if Autorun is active, you get all sorts of anomalies.

Hey, Corky... You've bailed me out in a previous issue... Thank you for stepping up on this as well.

Working Windows 98.... If there is a corruption loop as you suggest (sounds likely to me) Is there a way to Identify it, then make it go away?

Thanks for your continued support

About the only way I can think of off hand to correct a corrupted sound is to go into Control Panel, Multimedia and find that on Windows' list of wave files to play and change it. That will determine if it is the file that is corrupted or the driver. If a different sound, other than the click, persists in looking, then it looks like you should reinstall your sound card. That's not a huge trauma as long as you have all the driver disks or CD or it's in Windows.
