I have a Seagate 1.5Tb ST31500341AS that is about a month old. It has the CC1H firmware on it.

The problem just started yesterday where the drive shows up in the BIOS and Device Manager but shows 0 bytes as capacity. The drive does not show up in My Computer however. I contacted Seagate and they send it isn't a firmware issue and to send the drive in for replacement. BUT, I have thousands of pictures on there that I just moved over from another hard drive that I no longer have and this broken drive is the only place I have the pictures right now. (I know I should have backed them up right away but I didn't think the drive was going to fail after a month).

Seagate wants me to send the drive to their recovery company i365 for a quote to recover files. But I hear they charge a lot of money for their data recovery services even though it's their POS drive that failed!! So, if anyone can please help me out with some suggestions on what I should do and if it's even possible for me to recover the files myself please let me know!

Thanks to anyone in advance for taking the time to respond!

You are out of luck. Every company that makes hard disk drives has a policy that they are not responsible for data loss of corruption no matter the cause.

Best bet is data recovery, it will cost, but you other options are minimal... Huge hard drives are nice, but they just allow more data to be lost at any given moment. Multiple backups are the only safe ways to go.

Not to beat the dead ( very dead ) horse. Anybody that knows anything knows that hard drives are electromechanical devices and they can and do fail all the time. Never trust all your data ( esp data that is valuable to you ) to the fickleness of hard disk reliability. If you would like to blame someone after this happens the prime candidate is looking back at you in the mirror.

AFAIK, your drive is one of the models that Seagate is doing for free because of their bad firmware.

The reported failure is caused by a defect in the Firmware of the hard drive. If your hard drive has already failed, the Data Recovery Group has a program to fix the problem and return the data to you on another hard drive. The Data Recovery Group will evaluate the drive for free. If the failure is the result of the known firmware defect we will repair the firmware, copy the data to another hard drive.

Unless you have the improved firmware.

Edit, Looks like you have the new firmware. No go on the free data recovery. Sorry!
