I ordered this 11/17 and the website says it shipped today. I'm way too lazy to build my own comp and way to ignorant to know that AMD 64 kicks intel's ass in gaming. So basically I bought this on impulse because i found a ridiculous coupon that was expiring in like 5 hours and I added the 20in widescreen LCD. The 2005fpw's have been going for about $700 so maybe I'll sell it, but i've heard HL2 in 16:9 mode is insane. So was this purchase wise, and will it play HL2 and CS:S at greater than 20 fps (that's what i'm getting now on CS 1.6 with my AMD Athlon 1.1 Ghz + Radeon 9000)?

Dimension 8400
Pentium® 4 Processor 540 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB)
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x512M)
Dell 20 inch UltraSharp? 2005FPW Widescreen
Dell AS500 14W Flat Panel Stereo Spkrs for 1704FP,1905FP,2001FP Flat Panels
256MB PCI Express? x16 Nvidia® GeForce 6800 GTO Graphics Card
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
16X DVD-ROM Drive
Total $1,492.80

You should be able to run it pretty well with that setup. Athlon 64 processor would be a bit faster, but that should do fine.

One thing I would DEFINATELY do is unlock the other 4 pixel pipelines on that video card. It's supposed to be pretty easy to do, and that'll give you a nice performance boost.

Nice machine...great price to include the monitor too

I always reccomend building your own especially for gaming but the system is pretty good I guess.

Reply to kabob:

I read about unlocking the GTO the 4 pipelines but i think Dell figured out how to stop people from OCing it.

I purchased this machine because of the price. Had I not found the discount i think I would have gone with AMD 3500+

You should elect to get the RAID setup. Add another 160 SATA drive. Also, dump the speakers. They're crap.

Dells upper end PCs like the 8400 are very fast indeed...you did well and should be able to play Half-Life 2 with nearly everthing maxed.

Dell is not a popular name around here though because most of us are DIYers . I am a DIYer and own a Dell and can tell you first hand that Dells beat many DIY set-ups in terms
of sheer speed.

Have fun!

WTF?!? $1,492 for a complete system WITH a 20" LCD?.... Where I live, 20" LCD go for about $2,000 US. It sucks so bad living here (computer parts prices-wise).

Good setup man. Great price. 8/10 now, will be 4/10 in 1 year (because you won't be able to upgrade very easy by then).

Actually, now that I think about it, now may be the perfect time to pick up a machine like that. We are all gonna have to dump everything around then when BTX hits primetime, so I take that back. You scored IMHO.

Yes everyone I KNOW IT'S A DELL LOL, BUT THE 30% COUPON DOOOOD!!!

OK so i was first bent on getting the AMD 64 3500+ with the 6800 GT for about $1400 but of course it would come WITHOUT the pwnage 20in widescree lcd...as for the speakers my apt manager is a B!tch so I was looking for something I could plug my headfones into anyways (it has plugs on the side of the speakers).

As for upgrading, I planned on buying a computer that I can pay for, done, wam, maybe add a dvd-r, depreciate over 2-4 years and convert it to something or just dispose of it (I'm a public accountant as you can see...). Maybe I'll RAID it sometime next year when I get my bonus.

Hmmm...after reading all the msg boards seems like computers nowadays just get so outdated so fast...I remember my dad's Mac IIci owned for like 5 years and lasted usefully 7-8...and the 486 lasted a while too. Well at least I put to good use the AMD Athlon 1.1GHz i got freshman year of college 5 years ago (can you believe that cost $2500?!?!?! came with Geforce2 remember that?!?), and I plan on converting it into a server or one of those TV pause/record PVR/DVR thingys. Anyways, thanks for all the feedback, whether they be positive or negative!

It's just funny on so many levels What do people seriously think, a sticker on the case reading "Dell" makes the same or inferior hardware faster? That a system which doesn't allow overclocking is faster than one which does when the ability is utilized? That a 6800nu or an Intel chip = the pinnacle of gaming performance? FYI An AMD-equivalent chip (ie. 3400+ vs. Intel's 3.4ghz model) yields 15% higher framerates in most games (assuming the video card isn't very outdated and that you're not playing games in 640x480) while costing a good deal less money. Their video encoding performance is roughly equal, though Intel used to hold the advantage in this vs AMD's old XP line of chips. Added bonus is that the A64s don't idle at temperatures approaching that of nuclear explosions  And Intel isn't expected to have a 64bit chip until a good six months or so after Longhorn is released... sorry man, but you wasted your money. It's nothing to be ashamed of, we've all had our blunders.

throw in an audigy 2 gamer and add Logitech or Klipsch 5.1s. HL2 with audigy2/z-680 setup is awesome, totally immersive audio environment.

Agreed, you got a very nice system.
Everyone knows that the Athlon 64 is better in games, but you know that by now as well.

Decent system, and just because it was made by Dell or anyone else doesn't always mean it is bad. I agree, Dell and others can have much better systems than DIY ones, especially since a lot of people put their own PC together and then it is absolutely horrible afterwards.
