Hi Guys,
I have been asked to do the following for an A-Level exam. It is a database using Access. I have the 2002 version.

'One of the administrative tasks in a hospital is to keep a record of loans to patients of equipment such as wheel chairs and crutches. The patients borrowing the equipment may be still in hospital or they may have been discharged. Records have to be kept of what equipment has been borrowed, by whom and when, and also if any equipment is not available because it is being repaired. You have been asked to create a computer application to replace the present manual one to record the necessary details to enable greater
control to be kept and so cut down on loss and wastage.'Text

You may ask why am I doing an A-Level if I can't do a simple database? Well, I have no problems using all other software, and definetely no problems with hardware (except those expressed in the forums). So, hopefully you may be able to suggest a few little 'features' for my database.

Much appreciated.

You will need a table containing patient info
You will need a table containing equipment info
You will need a table containing maintenance/repair (company) info
You will need a table contain information on patient use of equipment
You will need a table contain information on company handling of equipment

One relationship table should contain fields for indexes on equipment and company
One relationship table should contain fields for indexes on equipment and patient
Both relationship tables should contain fields for dates of checkout, estimated return time, delivery, notes.

The equipment info should contain an available inventory count.

All you need to do then is program the Add/Subtract and entry of info into the fields via some form.

as an addition to eaglekeeper's very helpful reply, you need to make a list of each type of item and then use the process of "normalisation" to rationalise these into tables where data can be stored with the minimal amount of repetition. You may already know a bit about normalisation, but do a search on google. it's dead easy. once you have the list it will take you an hour to learn about third normal form and then put your data structure into third normal form. once you have this you will have built up an understanding of your foundations and then walk the rest! enjoy..................
