There's also Galactic Civilization II.
Oh, yeah, I knew there was one that i was forgetting.
If you like Turn-based strategy, OP, this is a good one. Can be very complex, though.

Thanks all for your replies. I also should have added that I was looking for a single player game. I've moved away from on-line multiplayer gaming since I got so pissed off playing Battlefield 1943 on the PS3.

I remember microsoft making a space game that I enjoyed, but I don't remember what it was called. Anyone?

Now that said, there was one that I loved back in the day, but it wasn't so much about fleet combat (in fact that was all done by the computer), it was about fleet management, composition, ship design, logistics, resource management, and strategic placement/movement of ships/fleets. I believe the game was called "Stars!".
You see that is your problem right there. FPS+console=crap. FPS+console+online=biggest crap out there. FPS's are meant for the PC with a keyboard+mouse, not a gamepad with limited precision and limits on rate of turning.

Exactly what's wrong with online console gaming - you have no idea where the server you're connected to is located. Often, it's not even a server - but someone on a piece of string downloading the entire Internet through P2P, making your experience a laggy mess. You don't have to look through servers, find local servers, worry about ping, etc.
