Thanks all for your replies. I also should have added that I was looking for a single player game. I've moved away from on-line multiplayer gaming since I got so pissed off playing Battlefield 1943 on the PS3.

I'd still recommend Sins of a Solar Empire. I haven't played online once, and I still totally dig it.

The AI can be hard enough for noobs that it will still give you a tough learning curve as you try to figure out the strategy.

(though, if you keep paying off the pirates to attack your biggest rival, you'd be in pretty good shape, heh)

Playing a really shitty game got you away from multiplayer? That's sad.

What about checking out the Space Empires games? While I haven't played the latest (Space Empires V) which has been getting some fairly mixed reviews, I had a blast playing III back in the day. IV - which, again, I haven't played - seems to have received some positive feedback, so perhaps that's a good one to start out on.

Space Empires IV appears to be a complex, deep game but the presentation (or what I saw of it) is very dry. I bought it during one of those Steam sales and have attempted to get a game going several times unsuccessfully.

I'm one of the very few who had a decent time with a patched version of MoO3. That's about as complex as a game can get.

You see that is your problem right there. FPS+console=crap. FPS+console+online=biggest crap out there. FPS's are meant for the PC with a keyboard+mouse, not a gamepad with limited precision and limits on rate of turning.

Now that said, there was one that I loved back in the day, but it wasn't so much about fleet combat (in fact that was all done by the computer), it was about fleet management, composition, ship design, logistics, resource management, and strategic placement/movement of ships/fleets. I believe the game was called "Stars!".

That game was awesome. I played the shit out of a demo of that from a PC Gamer CD when I was a kid although I think MoO/MoO2 were better games overall.

Online play on the PC is way worse than on consoles.

Technically, it is far superior.

In practice, there's mroe cheating, more hacking, more issues and just more unnecessary drama.

On a console you just mash a couple of buttons and you get put in a game and everything works. You don't have to look through servers, find local servers, worry about ping, etc. Sure, all that extra power is nice, but when it is poorly implemented, as it often is, it just means there is a multi-minute barrier to entry to playing a game.

Exactly what's wrong with online console gaming - you have no idea where the server you're connected to is located. Often, it's not even a server - but someone on a piece of string downloading the entire Internet through P2P, making your experience a laggy mess.

Notice how consoles promote the '3-bar' latency system, with no numerical indicator? That's so the threshold can be set to whatever Microsoft, Sony, EA etc. want. while the gamer plays in total ignorance, when 'green' might actually mean something as silly as 'under 200 ping'.

Anyway, this is going off-topic - sorry OP!
