So I'm just curious... Are there any phones out there that have a good call quality through the earpiece, and speakerphone? I am not talking about the sound quality on my end, although that's also very important. I am talking about how well THEY can hear me. Hopefully without sounding like an Apple fanboy, I want to mention that with iPhone 4s, I could stand in one far side of the room, and have the phone all the way on the other side, and whoever I was talking to, could hear me easily. With the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, I'm lucky if they can hear me 5 feet away. Usually I have to talk right into the phone itself. With the iPhone 5, the speakerphone is ok, but earpiece is bad. I am constantly straining to hear the other side. 4S was great in that regard. Never had trouble hearing people.

I heard the HTC One has a great earpiece and a speakerphone, but I would like to hear something from those that own it. Also, what about other phones? LG G2? Nexus 5?

you could get a bluetooth earpiece

i recently bought the bose series 2 headset... works well, people can hear me and vice versa. it is indeed loud... too bad it only has ~4 hour battery life

Don't really want to add to the amount of wireless signals near my head if I can help it. I thought about a bluetooth earpiece, but I rather avoid it if I can.

Get one of the ones that clips on or a pendent type.

So is bluetooth safer than cell signal to be near your head?

Exactly. Emitted power from Bluetooth is far less than a cellulat signal. We are talking about 1000 milliwatts vs 100 milliwatts

Class 2, limited to 100mw. Class 3 limited to 1mw. Fat better than ~1-1.5W watts.

I'm not understanding this question. Do some phones use the ear speaker as a microphone in speakerphone mode?

People still freak out about this stuff? Radio waves are non-ionizing. That means that the only way they would really impact your brain is if the signal is strong enough that it starts heating your head to the point that it cooks (think a microwave). I assure you this isn't happening from a cell phone.

let's be practical and honest about it. Cellular signals and how they impact the brain are still not very well in der stood. Most studies appear to be inadequately done, or they are done in really retarded situations where you give way more radiation then what would normally be experienced. That said the studies at do it well are still focused on the cellular level because it's such a complex question. It's been a few years since I've looked at this but I can't imagine that things have changed radically unless there was a breakthrough.

that said if I had to choose I would definitely take a class 3 Bluetooth device because it would hopefully be better, even given the risks of extremely low power a fax on the cellular level

Bluetooth headsets use less power but are closer to your skull and in contact for longer.
If there is an adverse effect I'd guess that it wouldn't be that different with a headset to without.

The effect of rainbows on colon cancer has also not been carefully studied, but no one's claiming that they're dangerous.

There's no need to do detailed in vivo studies specifically on cell phone radiation because none of the rationales for why it would be dangerous make any sense. In order for cell phone radiation to be cancer-inducing (or cause any other kind of defect), it needs to create a stressful environment for neurons. Light can do this either through ionizing radiation or heating. The first is the most prominent and dangerous form of radiation damage. It's why nuclear fallout and UV light are real dangers. For the compounds found in your body, however, you need photons with at least 2-3eV of energy in order to dislodge an electron (i.e. blue light or higher frequency). By comparison, a photon form a cell phone has less than 10^(-5) eV, way, way out of the harmful range.

The other way you can cause damage is by causing severe thermal vibrations in the cells, effectively cooking them until the proteins begin to denature. This is akin to how a microwave works. Even here, though, a microwave requires a few hundred watts of power to heat a cup of tea. If the radiation were enough to cause a problem, your head would feel hot. You can actually get a burn by climbing a radio tower and getting too close to a transmitter, but that doesn't mean that it's doing any harm to you down here, any more than look at a candle flame instead of touching it hurts you.

I can't believe I wasted this much energy on this topic, but I can't handle the stupidity.

There is no need to get angry. There is enough negative information about cell phones out there to raise concern and keep people concerned regardless of the amount of those who say cell phones are safe. Whatever the case may be, I merely said I didn't want additional wireless signals near my head as opposed to ones that are already there. I wasnt trying to raise a topic of safety of cell phones. I realize there is no need to get paranoid about these things, but I always live by "better safe than sorry" whenever possible.

Now, shall we get back to main topic please?

So far we have a couple of HTC One recommendations... I'll look at that one. Anyone else?

Another +1 for the One. I've owned mine since release day. I use the speaker all the time, never have had any complaints on my end or the other.

You could just get one of those stand alone Bluetooth speaker/mic jobbies and then not have to worry about it in future?

Samsung Behold. It had a great earpiece. So good it was used as the speaker as well.

But thanks for doing so.

Personally I've never been worried about mobile device radiation but its nice to read an informed post as to why.
