WHAT? these movies are FAR from mainstream. They're extremely popular among certain groups of people, but in no way fall under "mainstream." Clockwork is the only one that wouldn't be considered independent, and even then...it's not a film that the casual viewer has seen.

I'd say you have an overall good taste in movies based on your posts, but considering these films as mainstream reflects an extremely narrow and sadly limited exposure to film as a whole.

I've forgotten more mise en scene than you've seen. I've probably seen more feature length experimental films than you have seen of mainstream movies.

You are correct about mainstream not having anything to do with the OP. I should have said, only fairly shallow viewers would say that Requiem for a Dream or Memento were WTF movies. In fact, I thought Memento was too riddled with inconsistencies and logical flaws to make a reasonable suspension of disbelief possible. Maybe, WTF was the writer thinking? What was so special about Requiem aside from the acting? Correct, the answer is zero. Drugs, false hope, sexual depravity, graphic footage of third rate makeup effects. I'd take The Days of Wine and Roses over it any day.

A Clockwork Orange is high on most top 100 films of all time lists. A real cult classic!

Sorry I have high standards for WTF. It takes quite a bit for me to say WTF to anything, and triply so in films.

If anything I have far to much exposure to film and film study to be affected much by anything any longer.

The original ending of Neo Genesis Evangelion was so WTF that they had to make a second fucking attempt which was equally WTF but was supposed to explain the first WTF in some manner. That's what happens when you take drugs, your reality never hits any sort of understandable norm.

I don't think the new ending worked any better... maybe I'll pull out the dvds and rewatch them again...over all a pretty fucked up show.

Since it's almost helloween for WTF, try the off beat cult classic From Beyond another attempt at Lovecraftian lore and horror in movie form. With the lovable Lovecraftian muse Jeffrey Combs. If this don't make you go WTF seriously, WTF?

And another good helloween fare movie that leaves you going WTF is Lifeforce for those who have never seen it. Naked space vampires that want to suck your... soul! It just so happens it was released the year before From Beyond and the same year Reanimator came out, too.

I would list some of my WTF foreign horror favs, but I think most of those you all might not get into. Like Suspiria A great place to begin your exposure to Dario Argento or The Beyond which is a good intro to Lucio Fulci. But if you want a few off beat foreign zombie scares that make you go WTF try Demons by Lamberto Bava and it's undead sister Demons 2.

If any of these are unavailable to rent, they are all well worth the buy to any fan of WTF offbeat horror films.
