Computer has Phenom II X2 555 + 120mm fan (no OC)
AMD 785G mobo
GeForce GT 240 video card + 80mm fan
1.5TB 5400 rpm hard disk
PCI wireless card
DVD writer
Old Antec Piano case, no cooling fan

This box sits in my bedroom and downloads torrent files at night. I DON'T WANT TO HEAR PSU FAN NOISE. I guess the box will use about 200W while I sleep.

Both 120mm CPU cooler fan @800 rpm and 80mm video card fan are practically inaudible.

The power supply has to be <1000 rpm. No LED.

I know SeaSonic X-650 meets my need, but not my pocket. I heard Corsair TX650, HX620, Antec TruePower New TP-650 are low noise. But I have no fan speed data or noise data (dB). Please recommend a quiet PSU costing less than SeaSonic X-650.

I have an HX650, the revised version of the HX620, and I never hear it (my machine is very quiet). The thing is, it's overkill for your setup. If you don't mind that and want more headroom for future upgrades, it's fine. Given your system comp, the Seasonic M12II 430 would be a great candidate for the amount of juice you need right now. Of all PSUs with a fan, it's supposed to produce the least amount of noise.

I have a zalman 750 watt PSU. It is completely inaudible and runs quite cool to boot, but it's kind of pricey and doesn't have the best modular cables.

For 2007, the Silencer was one of the better power supplies on the market...that's a given. But remember, it's a Seasonic-built platform and that same platform was the same as used in the Corsair HX620 power supplies.

Today, in 2010, the Silencer 750 has been outclassed in every metric you care to consider.....quietness, voltage regulation, ripple/noise generation, efficiency.....by a host of other power supplies on the market, including CWT's DSG platform units (like the Corsair 850HX), Seasonic's M12D/S12D platform and their newer X-series platform, Antec's Delta-built Signature platform, Enermax's Revo's, some of Enhance's upper end units like the Silverstone Strider 1500W.

Granted, the Silencer is still a good power supply but is nothing special any longer, if it ever was in the first place.

And as for the new line coming from PCP&C, if it's anything like Tony, the OCZ rep on XS, describes and is to be believed, PCP&C is moving way downscale in its choice of OEM's...no more Seasonic built units (a complete tragedy and mistake in my opinion on their part), but may instead by sourced from the likes of Sirfa/Sirtec.

As for the OP, the Antec TP-650 is very quiet. Ran a TP-750 for a while and even when my computer was pulling 520W from the wall, I never heard it run. Much the same case can be made for the midrange Corsair HX series.

If you can find a deal on the Seasonic X650 I would give it a shot. Playing WoW on a I5-750 at 4.0ghz with a 5750 and the fan doesn't even turn on after half an hour.

Thanks for the recommendations. I learned my real power need is only about 250 watts, and idling power less than 100W. Can you recommend a lower wattage quiet psu? about 400W? Nexus Value 430W is $90 incl. shipping. Anything less expensive?

How about Corsair 400CX? It costs only $40 after rebate. About half the price of Nexus Value 430W. Quiet enough to be in a bedroom?

Thanks.

How about the Rosewill Green RG-430 S12 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182202

I've posted a review of a similar unit the RG-430-2 at SPCR http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=57261

I believe the unit to be from the same OEM as the Nexus Value 430W, but with a different fan. It doesn't turn off like the Seasonic, but still extremely quiet. While idling, my 120mm cpu fan is at 380rpm and my case fan is at about 450rpm and the psu noise doesn't stick out at all. I am sitting 4 feet away and it's essentially inaudible.

So far it had no trouble powering the following:
-C2D 3ghz
-6gb DDR2
-ATI 5770
-1 7200rpm hd
-1 optical drive

Something else to consider if you just want something to download torrents I would look at getting a NAS that supports torrents. You cannot beat how quiet they are , usually fanless and the power usage is very low , around 20 watts so you save there too.

something like the dlink-321 is $98 after rebates and has a ton of applications that support it.

If quiet is what you want, you actually don't want to get a psu that's too small. PSUs generally turn on the fan when they hit certain load levels so you'd WANT the psu to use far less than what it's capable of. Having said that, 400 watts is actually not a bad choice for your rig.

By the way, have you considered either soundproofing your case or getting a different one? Going from my old Antec SONATA case to the one I currently have is like night and day in terms of noise.

The P182 was discontinued. Look into the P183 (its successor) if you are interested. Be warned, the case isn't cheap so it might be out of your budget...

Seasonic S and M Series are awesome (and they cost way less than the newer X series).

SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze
This is the exact same PSU as the Corsair HX-620 -$90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-095-_-Product

There is also an M12II 520 version --> That's the same thing as Corsair HX-520

You can get the S versions (not modular). Also, great PSUs, but for $10, I'd go for the M series.

actually I don't think so. The M12IIs are group regulated, the Corsairs I am sure are independently regulated

Ok my bad, they are not exactly the same. They may be based off the same/similar platforms, but Seasonic is the one that manufacturers the PSU's to the specs Corsair for these models:

CX-400
VX-450, HX-450
HX-520, HX-620
TX-650
HX-650

http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=PSU_Manufacturers

They even share the same fan (ADDA). In other words, M12II 600 is not going to be inferior to Corsair 620.

Erm, to play devil's advocate, any group related design will be guaranteed to have worse voltage regulation on extremely heavy crossloads. Luckily that's basically impossible in any normal computer. Also the M12/S12II series from seasonic looks to be basically the best group related psu out there. Probably the best budget psu you can get. But if I wanted one of the best psus period, I'd definitely want independent regulation. Now mind you, I'd probably pick the M12II over the CX and VX series for sure and most of the older TX series.

the P180 basically has all the enhancements of the P182 now. the only difference was the color. the p183 has slightly less restrictive intake meshes, an uglier door, and they moved the bottom fan to a much better location.

as for power supply, there is no way that computer uses anywhere near 250 watts, even playing the biggest game with prime 95 burn test and running gpu grid. i don't get much over 250 using an overclocked c2quad and an hd4870 (which just sucks down power). a quality 430 will drive your computer.
