I have pretty much finalized my parts list! I have been out of the computer-building game for a few years so I am looking for some experts to critique my plan. I was initially unsure if there would be a worthwhile performance increase with 12GB RAM. I have read posts with people asking "Is 12GB too much?" and based on what I have heard I am all for going with 12GB. I am constantly multitasking so I believe I would enjoy the headroom, especially as my box ages.

My main concerns about this build right now are:
1. Being able to get a decent overclock with 12GB of this OCZ Platinum
2. Having a powerful enough PSU
3. Keeping the system cool and quiet with air cooling

Here is a part list:

ZALMAN CNPS9900LED 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler - I have a Zalman 7700 fan right now on my system and I have been very pleased with it, so I am inclined to buy the next generation product. If anyone has a better recommendation, I would rather not pay so much for a heatsink/fan combo!

Intel Core i7 920

12GB OCZ Platinum DDR3 1600 7-7-7-24 - I am attracted by the low timings and I have heard good things from people who have purchased these

ASRock X58 Extreme - If only I could find someplace that is selling them! I was impressed from the review here on anandtech

SAPPHIRE 100270SR Radeon HD 4850 X2 - This card keeps up with the 4870 X2 for over $100 less

OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W - I am not 100% this is the right PSU for my system

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache - Cheap!

Sony Optiarc Black 24X - Cheap!

I am still at a loss as to what case I should get. I am looking for a large one made of steel and/or aluminum at a good price. If you have recommendations I would love to hear them!

If you know of any good alternatives that you would for sure recommend against something I have selected, I am very interested in hearing them!

Thank you for your help.

Well the only thing that I would consider different is the PSU. I like the Corsair 650tx for $20 more (after $20 MIR) over the OCZ 700w PSU. The OCZ has 43A across all 4 12v rails and the Corsair has 52A across the 1 12v rail. The OCZ should work, but I prefer the quality and longer warranty that the Corsair gets you. The OCZ comes with a 3 yr. warranty and the Corsair has a 5 yr. warranty.
As far as the 12gb's of DDR3, I'm not convinced that this really makes that much of a difference. I believe 6 gb's is all that you really need. In a years time or so you should be able to get 4 gb sticks for a resonable price. I don't know if you lose triple channel by using all of the 6 slots on the motherboard. That would be my big concern with the memory.

Switch the PSU like lunyone suggested, switch the Zalman out (zalman coolers are pretty poor) for something like a Xigmatek S1283, Sunbeam CCF, OCZ Vendetta, TRUE. Also, you don't need 12gb ram. At all. I multitask a lot too, and I couldn't even come close to using the 4gb I have, much less 6gb, much less 12gb. Save the money and upgrade to 12gb when its cheaper

First off, most of this boils down to preference, and your suggested build is reasonable. If it were up to me, however, these are the changes I would make

1) PSU is fine imo. Its a solid company, and its on sale, go for it. If you plan on going SLI in the future (which you should with that motherboard), you might want to consider a 1000w just to cover your bases. It doesnt need to be crazy expensive, Plenty out there for ~100.

2) +1 No 12g ram. Absolutely no need, unless your a professional photo/video editor. 6gb is perfect for any other task!!!

3) There are better CPU cooling options imo. On a budget, I have been extremely impressed with the the CoolerMaster Hyper N520. For something a little beefier, can't go wrong with one of these Noctua's http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835608007

4) you may want to reconsider your GPU choice, although its not a bad option. imo, with your motherboard capabilities, Im sure you could find a more potent performance/cost ratio. And with what you save on ram, maybe two 275's?

5) As far as a case, you have a couple options. My personal favorite case is this one...

Easy to cary/move (which is useful for much more than just lan parties)
Excellent airflow
Beautiful

Budget case alternative: Antec 300- they do the job

Hope this helps...
