At least here by me, Whole Foods has started bringing in pork from a local farm, and that farm doesn't engage in any of these practices. They raise fewer pigs, but they give 'em space and some opportunity to forage. The cost per pound isn't much higher than WF's standard pork prices. So I buy that, since I do think pigs are intelligent and should be treated well. Changing what you buy says a lot more than some petition, too.

Vote with your wallet.

Wasn't that the list of folks that have banned the use of those crates and not a list of companies that use them?

No, it wasn't because people wanted cheap meat, it's because producers want more profits. It's called profit for a reason. As the video describes other stores don't buy from these despicable places that raise pigs. Any animal that will be eaten should at least have a dignified life until there time is up. Cows get better treatment living on a pastor!

As to the drug supplier comment, we do treat the drug addict. But like peoples craving for meat or food there will always be a demand.

define a dignified life. guaranteed food and water? protection from predators?

everyone likes to thing that "free range" animals grow up happy and frolicking through a cuddly forest. nature is anything but.

you know what happens when nature kills an animal? it gets eaten by something else. WHILE STILL ALIVE.

while wiki answers might not be the most accurate source of info, but its list of cattle predators doesn't seem all that unreasonable, either

What are the predators of a cow?

This all depends on where you are located. In North America, wolves, bears, cougars and coyotes will hunt and kill calves and old and weak cows. In Africa, lions, hyenas, leopards, wild dogs, crocodiles and cheetahs will kill livestock. In Asia, tigers, crocs, alligators, panthers, etc. will also prey on cattle.

i'm sure all of those canine and feline animals have the decency to kill cattle in the kindest, gentlest way possible

point being? i'm not justfying how people do raise animals in an agricultural/industrial manner (and in many cases, a lot of this is cruel and unjustified). i'm just pointing out that the alternative is not nearly as pleasant as everyone likes to think.

While troubling, I'm not going to blindly sign this petition or boycott walmart. Without knowing who the supplier is, this just appears to me to be another walmart hate party.

You didn't watch the video in the OP's post. /facepalm

I think that is the lesser point from the video. Gestation crates were more its concern: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestation_crate

Apparently whacking piglet heads on the ground is an approved method of euthanasia if done properly: http://atwork.avma.org/2012/07/21/h...ia-of-suckling-pigs-using-blunt-force-trauma/

That's the problem: By grasping at straws to demonize Wal-Mart over the inhumane actions of a few idiots (and to push their vegetarian agenda), they compromised their entire goal. Screw those idiots and screw these idiots and screw the gullible idiots who fall for it and push it on us (sorry, OP).

How about you watch the video and tell me that things don't need to be changed. Look at the fucking environment and the treatment of these pigs for fucks sake! Did you even see that piglets heads were bashed on the floor? You want to talk about predators but it's the human that's the biggest!

Yep. Only 9 of 50 states. Probably just California and some non-farm states. That part is blown out of proportion too and they use the other violent mistreatment to sell you on it. Once again: gullible. If you really care about that one aspect then you should care about them presenting it right without all the bull####.

This.
To be honest, I don't think the point is to demonize Walmart. The point is to convince Walmart to use its power to stop these practices, like only Walmart can do.

Yeah...but regulation has proven largely unnecessary when industry pressure made almost all of them stop voluntarily. Since there's one remaining, a little awareness is all it takes to stop that one. People stop buying from entities that use the supplier, so the supplier changes methods.

You actually don't need states to ban it.

i didn't ask whether those pigs had a dignified life. i asked you to define what a dignified life is for a domesticated animal that is bred for slaughter (meat).

those are two separate questions.
