Don't let your loss be a waste, give the gift of better life and health to others. You aren't going to need that body when you are gone. Or that heart, liver, kidney, eyes, lung, pancreas, intestines, corneas, even skin and bones can be of help.

It doesn't matter how old you or a loved one was. Don't be selfish.

My Daddy was a donor. He had a terrific sense of humor and would have loved the questions I had to answer for him following his death this past September 3rd. Daddy died on a Saturday evening, the organ bank called me at 2am and left me laughing while answering questions about my Dad's sex life [he was 84!]. If he ever used drugs or traveled through areas where he might have been exposed to Ebola. LMAO.

Those interesting questions and the laughter helped me through a night that would have otherwise been one of solid grief and tears.

Yup. Everywhere should be done like Singapore where you obliged to donate organs during death unless you chose opt-out for whatever (dumb) reason, and that carries a penalty for being placed much lower on the organ transplant waiting list.

I'll have no use for my organs when I die and I'm opting for cremation.

Meh, they won't take my blood or my organs.

At least the vampire blood collection crews leave me alone.

Funny you mention that, I got my driver's license renewal forms and other stuff the other day and one of the included forms was an organ donor registration form. I had already checked donor when I initially got my license (or maybe it's health card, I can't remember as I got all the renewals at once) but the form specifies that even if you did check yes originally you still need to actually register. So I did, I just need to actually go to the Service Ontario building to finalize everything (need photo for license and health card etc). That's pretty much a 1 day ordeal due to having to wait in line so long, so been procrastinating. But I need to do it by end of month since my license expires lol.

I try to donate blood regularly as well. I'm A- so it's a bit of a rarer blood type. I'm picturing dracula with a grin when they keep calling me for my blood lol.

You can donate and then be cremated.

They should make it so you get a free cremation if you donate and maybe a $10% discount at participating funeral homes.

I can just picture it now:

"FREE! Cremation and 10% off coupon for your funeral.*

* in exchange for all your organs"

With my luck I would be a match for someone like OJ.

Nah... my luck is that my organs would go to some crooked business man or politician. Who knows, the doctors might even decide that I'm "close enough" to being brain dead just to save their corrupt asses.

I have benefited twice from the generosity of strangers. I was an organ donor before that, but I am particularly attentive now to make sure that status never changes.

Just looked up a list of cons for donation and there aren't many at all for the donor or their family. I've always wondered, why not do it...

Are the emergency care doctors and ICU doctors screened for possible conflict of interests regarding the potential to not provide the best care possible for people that HAVE AGREED to donate their organs upon death?

That's one of my worries that they won't see me as a patient just a bag of organs that can go somewhere else.

That's one of the things I do wonder too, but I imagine they realize that if this got out, it would be VERY bad as it would reduce the amount of people who do sign up. So chances are it's probably not the case. At least not here in Canada where the healthcare system is non profit. Not sure about the states, there might be a black market for organs lol. Sell it to other countries for the highest bidder. Lol I can just picture organ auctions. Bunch of half dead people who need a transplant bidding.

I don't mean purely for financial profit, but rather the following two scenarios.

1. They personally know or know somebody who knows somebody who could benefit from your organs if you were to die.

2. For whatever reason they pass judgment on your decisions leading up to your stay in the hospital, and decide to let you die, figuring your organs are better suited elsewhere to better people. Say it was suspected that you were at fault in an incident or violence or a vehicle accident.

The estate of an organ donor should be compensated, maybe a burial stipend. Everyone in the process makes bank but the donor and the recipient. It's like the NCAA for dead people.

<== Yes, I signed up for organ donation

I refuse because I believe immortality will be invented in 100 years time. So I ask my mum if she could put me in a refrigerator before that time comes.

Like that guy who's heart went to Dick Cheney, Chaney shows no internist in who the doner is and isn't at all grateful. Says 'It's my new heart, not someone else's old heart'
Fucking psychopath

I'm paranoid enough that I kind of agree with you.

<--Not an organ donor.
