I own a pc but have useed imacs and ibooks a few times too with their new OS and must say fast and seems to be just as Kool as
crapy Windows but unless they can get better hardware and software from other comps ( games really ) then theres no need to
leave Windows other then that they are Kool.

I don't really hate... but it has always seemed that the Mac was not a developer friendly platform. Perhaps this will change now that it is running a real preemptive multitasking OS.

So basically the lack of Visual Studio kind of turns me off...

Also, no games to speak of. At best Mac gets ports long after a game is released for PCs. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part this is true.

I am a networking type of person, and I want to get into programming. That is why Mac OS X.1 is PERFECT for me. It has all of the utilities a network admin needs (or atleast most for troubleshooting), and it is quite fast. I LOVE my iceBook

I don't hate them at all, but they need to open up as IBM did ages ago. Multiple vendors making their products will push down the prices for consumers on all Apple hardware, which will draw more users and new products. The idea of an expensive and proprietary form of hardware from a single vendor is antiquated. I like the look of them, but I'll get more bag for the buck going PC as well as more software and hardware choices.

I don't hate Macintosh, I think the macs are nice but I'd never buy one or use one if I didn't have too. A few quirks that I really don't like about the mac:

1 - One button mouse, I never understood why Apple didn't switch over to the PC format multi button mous
2 - Unstable, perhaps this isn't true w/ OS X but I've always had stability problems when using MacOS
3 - Stupid commercials w/ Jeff Goldblumn (I'm sure his name is spelt wrong). I hate watching him dancing around telling me how macs will make things "speed up" and "slow down"

I guess I've always viewed macs as toy computers more than "real" computers.

Don't hate them, in fact I sorta like them now that they have MacOS X.

But, they're just way too expensive, considdering the hardware is sub par in terms of performance.

And I get so friggin' annoyed when Mac zealots come talking about how G4+'s are faster than P4's and K7's, and refuse to give it up no matter what you say or present them with.

So, basically it comes down to these two:
Too expensive hardware for what it does.
Extremely annoying userbase(well much of it).

There are 2 sides:

The good:
Macs are stylish
Macs have decent applications, and some good editing facilities
RISC based CPUs might be ideal for your line of work

The bad:
Macs have only one mouse button! ARGH!
Cost vs. PCs
Limited compatability with the rest of the PC based working world.
Limited games.

I used to really hate macintosh, but since I started at this job and all we use are macs, I have grown to appreciate them somwhat. What used to bother me is the fact that they only had one button mice, the OS sucked in my opinion, and they were really expensive. But now that I have used them I see that despite them being expensive they last a lot longer than the average PC. In fact I was given a couple of Old 4400/200mhz machines and I can still use them for photoshop work and scanning in stuff. How many people can say that about thier 200mhz PC. OS X has made me look again too, I think that eventually I will get a new Ibook.

Like everyone else, I don?t hate the Macintosh. I?ve just never had a compelling reason to get one.

-They cost more to purchase.
-Software for the Mac is usually more expensive then the PC counterparts.
-Upgrading a Mac has often meant upgrading hardware, operating system, and software at the same time. EXPENSIVE!
-It?s been a while since I?ve tried to use a Mac, but the last time I tried one I really missed having a left mouse button.

In summary, I?ve always viewed the Mac as an overpriced computer with slightly below average hardware, a slightly above average operating system, and way below average availability of affordable software

A few years ago, I thought the Mac had a lot going for it. Especially for desktop publishing and image editing, but they just didn't have the same Bang for the Buck I've grown accustom to with PCs. Now that most PCs have all become powerful enough to do all the things the Mac has been famous for, I see even less reason to get one.

Nothing to hate, but what you get is more expensive hardware, totally proprietary hardware (remember the old Packard Bells and Compaqs, basically they can charge you whatever they want for Mac parts and replacement parts because you can't get them anywhere else) more expensive software if you want the Mac version of the mainstream PC titles, plus the wait for it to be ported over to Mac, which can take a long time with some titles, if ever. And lastly, I work in tech support for broadband internet, and if you say that you need support and you have a Mac, 90% of the techs throw up their hands, put you on forever hold, and start looking around for that guy that knows anything about Macs. Sad but true. Macs simply aren't mainstream.

Also, it's widely thought that in two years or so the no one will be making Macs anymore. A company can't last that can't seem to get more than 10% of the market share no matter what they do. Mac thought the way into the market was giving away computers to schools and other organizations, thinking that if you learn on a Mac you'll later buy a Mac. That hasn't happened. So now they are going to try and build their own retail stores, like Gateway does but they will sell only Macs. This is their new business plan because no one is buying Macs in main line retail stores and they blame the retail stores. All this for a product that is slower than PCs, much more expensive than a PC if you look at performance vs price, and totally proprietary. And of course that new business plan has to be financed by someone, so you can expect what you pay for a Mac, and replacement parts to go up I'm sure. Sounds like a lose-lose situation, no matter how much you want to 'Think differently'.

Apple needs to open the architecture like Staver said. Until then it will always be too expensive. I can build a kick A$$ Athlon system for $400 (1.4, 30gig HDD, MB, 512 MB DDR Ram, without monitor). How much would the same Apple cost?

that's what people thought four years ago

Unlike everyone else here, I DO HATE MACS!!!!

1) Here at the University of Iowa, they are all around campus in our computer labs. One side of the room has macs, one side has PCs. Guess which side is always full, and which side (though stylish with its snazzy colors and circular mice) is dead silent.

2) Mac stability leaves a lot to be desired. I hear people complain about Windows, but the Mac that I have to use at work crashes constantly. I save my files every minute or so because the dang thing conks out so much. Also, if something does go wrong on a Mac, there is absolutely no chance of recovery. The whole thing dies: time for reboot with that annoying smiley little computer guy.

3) Where I work, I develop Java apps for a professor. The latest JDK supported by Mac OS 9 (what most Macs are running, contrary to what people might try and tell you) is JDK 1.1.8 This is archaic when it comes to Java. Unix/Linux and Windows both support up to JDK 1.4 At least OS X is supposed to support JDK 1.2, where most of the cool improvements came, but still, they are way behind when it comes to Java support.

4) Lack of a command line interface really hampers attempts to use products ported to Mac from Unix (read: JDK tools). If they could just implement a small little command interpreter, it would ease the lives of Unix users like myself quite a bit.

Now, I have never tried OS X, and from what I've heard (it being a Unix clone and all) it should clear up most of these problems. However, it shouldn't have taken 10 OS iterations to get there.

If you use Adobe Photoshop, buy a Mac.
If you do ANYTHING else, get a PC or Linux box. It's that simple.
