Drive like everyone on the road is deaf, dumb, blind and malicious. ....uh, and do use your turn signals. Just don't assume anyone notices.

This. My philosophy, exactly.

Wait...you mean that little lever thingie isn't just for hanging the key to my gas cap on? :whiste:

BoomerD is old...and remembers when the turn signal lever ONLY was for turn signals...and hanging the gas cap key...not high/low beams, cruise control, windshield wipers, or any of a dozen other functions.

my biggest pet peeve next to drivers who don't so much as tap their brakes at stop signs.

There's a road near me where people get rear-ended all the time BECAUSE they don't use their signals, and I can't understand why people don't want other drivers to be aware of their intentions.

It's a 6-lane, with businesses wall to wall on each side for 3 miles. Between traffic signals people get up to speed pretty quick, most doing 50. Then you have someone in the right lane who decides to duck into the Arby's, no signal but they hit the brakes to turn in, and the person behind can't slow down in time... pow.

Have driven that road for years, always signal, always slow down before approaching my turn. I'm just trying to keep from getting whacked.

I really don't understand why people don't use their signals. Want to get in front of me? Use your signal, I'll let you in every time. I'm not risking an accident to gain a tenth of a second.

While I agree, I tend to drive like a seasoned driver. If I am changing lanes, I only do it when I know I have enough space anyways otherwise I stay in my lane. So when I change lanes, I flick the signal once. That's all you get unless it is a multi lane highway and there's a small chance someone two lanes over could also be eying the spot I want.

I stopped using signals in turn only lanes but always use signals when slowing down for a turn. That is a must.

And give advanced warning to the enemy about my plans? Fuck no! That just gives you time to speed up to keep me from getting in

I try to, but around here this is the exact problem.... As soon as I try to everyone drives like you are out to steal THEIR spot on the road and hell will freeze before they let you in.

This is a pet peeve of mine as well. I'll be waiting at a red light trying to turn right. Several cars will come up barrelling up to the light from the other direction, then turn without signalling. I could have gone. Thanks for wasting my time assholes.

I guess people assume everyone else can read their mind. Luxury vehicle drivers are the worst for this as well. Buying a used 3-series doesn't entitle you to be a dick.

why? traffic in the other direction doesn't necessarily know that you're in a turn-only lane.

nothing annoys me more than when I'm trying to make a left turn and have to stop and "yield" to an on-coming car that -- it turns out -- is just making a left turn too except his signal isn't on. or I'm trying to turn out of a parking lot and even know all the on-coming traffic is turning into the lot, I still have to stop and yield because I have no way of knowing wtf they're doing without their turn signals to indicate.

Moot point since you will either have a green turn light or you don't have the right of way and have to yield. You will never be in the way of traffic in the opposite direction.... well assuming you drive like a sane person who knows the laws of the road.

Btw, to address your other point of turning drivers not signaling and you could have pulled out... I don't trust people to properly signal anyways so I'll actually wait for an indication of turning like slowing down or pulling to the shoulder before I pull out. Call me paranoid, but it's just safer to be certain... same reason I always look over my shoulders when changing lanes even if I know there are no cars (Bikes will sneak up on you going 100Mph and you will not notice them unless you were eyeing your rear view the whole time or you do a check. I had this happen once. Good thing I checked or he would have been attached to my car.)

What's LOL is seeing stopped cars in "turn only" lanes at a red light all with their blinkers on when it's completely meaningless, then the same people will make a right hand turn into a road or business down the road and fail to signal. In any event I always try and leave enough space to the car in front of me because if you rear-end someone your almost universally the one who gets blamed for the accident.

how do you figure?

let's say we're both at an intersection in opposite directions, both trying to make a left turn. your side of the road is empty, and there's a long line of cars in both lines (turning and going straight) on my side.

the light turns green and I have to stop to yield to you -- because you're giving me every indication that you plan on driving straight. however, you're making a super top secret left turn, except you can't because you have to yield to all the cars on my side who *are* going straight.

meanwhile, my time is just wasted until I figure out that you're not actually going straight.

We'd be facing each other in that case. It's a play by play. If someone designed a weird intersection like that, I'd use the signal. The roads that I see, two left turn lanes would run into each other if they both drove straight.

Edit: Now that I think about it, that scenario you describe is insanely unlikely. They will not design a road that you can turn across more than one lane of traffic in without a turn lane and they will not design turn lanes that don't face each other since it's wasting space. You're thinking of two single lanes and turning left with no turn lane.

I thought it was part of Idaho code, turn signal may only be used to confuse, mislead or annoy. If you use them as intended they take your license away.
