With tax and shipping (Texas), total came to $105.42, minus $50 rebate, is $55.42. Not bad for a Plextor....

I just received the order confirmation by email from Dell. Estimated shipping date Friday, October 8th. 10 days before they can ship? I do not accept shoddy service, I immediately cancelled the order.

I remember back when the Sony DRU-500A dvd recorder first came out. They were $349, if you can believe it, and no one had them in stock. Dell offered them for $279, if memory serves. I ordered one, and waited, and waited, and waited. They kept sending me emails pushing back the expected delivery date. I probably got 10 or 12 such emails over a period of like 5 months before I actually got the drive. I do not plan on repeating that experience.

If they don't ship the drive until the 8th... is the rebate still valid? What date will the receipt with the shipment say?

Just ordered one.. couldn't resist $53.47 after rebate.

Looks like my backup rig is getting a Lite-On DVD burner and my main rig is all Plextor (already have a 52x Plextor CD burner).

I just bought one. The order page no longer shows the rebate link, so I emailed dell that the rebate says purchase by 9/29, I ordered on 9/29, but they won't ship until 10/11 (and that is also when they say they will charge my card... so I asked dell if the rebate will still be valid. Their reply...

"We do understand your concern.

Please be informed as per our website a reduction of $22.59 from the
original price is offered for Plextor DVD burner and not the $50 rebate.

Therefore the order #xxx do not include $50 rebate.

If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.

Regards,

Dell Inc.
E-Business Sales Division"

I am getting ready to cancel the order. Does anyone know from personal experience if rebate will work????

I just called Dell and they said that the invoice that will come with the drive will show that you purchased it on the date you ordered, i.e. 9/28 for me. So the rebate should still work, and this is a great deal.

So anyone have a definite answer whether this is going to work or not? I'm debating whether I should cancel or not.

Dell has a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so you can return the drive (at no cost to you, they will arrange for the drive to be picked up) if the rebate isn't valid. It's just another option.

This drive received rave reviews at ConsumerSearch:
Linky

I currently have a Sony DRU-500a (yes, purchased at $349) and the Plextor 712A is too good a deal to pass up at $54 shipped to triple my current write speed. I have the Dell $50 rebate form pdf, if anyone has a suggestion as to where I could upload it. As long as you buy it by today, and have the form, they'll need to honor the rebate.

Now what to do with all my 4X and 2X media.

I ordered 9/24 at the 108.29 price, received it 9/27 ...called for a price adjustment when it fell to 90.38 on 9/28 and as usual no chance of getting a credit for the difference. I'm returning mine. This is the last time I pay for the original shipping charge to be taught a valuable piss-poor-customer-service lesson from Dell. They can figure out what to do with an open-box item. I'm holding out for a dual layer DVD burner now.

Nice deal even at the first promotional price. The promotions overlapped ...not sure whether you can get the rebate now. Beware the rebate is bar code specific and they have "turned stock". I'd be wary that the new ones wouldn't have the correct bar code.

Since there are 2 rebates for this ($50 & $30) and they both require the orig. UPC, I called the rebate center and was told to submit a UPC copy with the $30 MIR along with a letter. He said if it's rejected, just call and they will honor it.

I would feel better getting this in writing. I wonder if they will email this to me.

Anyway, here's the link for the second rebate:

i just ordered mine, to get in before the end of the deal, but i am having my doubts now.

the bottom of the rebate has its standard drivel, and of course it mentions that the rebate is not able to be combined with any offers, etc. so, im wondering if the 20% off debunks this deal.

however, i was wondering if you just sent them a copy of your invoice, receipt, etc but didnt include the price. then they wouldnt be able to tell what you paid, right? unless these boxes have different UPC's than the others, but i highly doubt they would have different UPc's just because of this dell deal. however, keep in mind that there are 4 models it lists that are eligible, and 4 different acceptable UPCs, so maybe this wont be an issue.

no doubt dell shouldve been clearer in the beginning, but they did it to themselves. i give this a 50/50 shot to work.

I've been doing rebates for a long while now (as have many here) & the manufacturer has

always required the 'original UPC for their rebates.

I do think that this is a nice deal, however I think that Dell is going to reject theirs & unless you send the original to Plextor you're going to be refused as well.

My .02 Good luck to everyone who went for it.

i forgot about that $30 rebate. well, even at $67, this is still a good deal, no? ill take what i can get. i still have my 4210a plextor writer, and it has never let me down. i paid around $125 for it.

hmm.. $50 rebate form says multiple places that the bar code must be one of four numbers. You can order by model number, but not by bar code. How can one verify that dell is going to send a burner with the correct bar code? I've never seen this on any other rebate form, and it seems like a red flag. I'm about ready to cancel my order...

my guess you cant order by bar code is in order to prevent fraud in cases such as this. im assuming if you had the bar code, you could potentially create fake ones, maybe? just a guess. besides, no other reason to do so, a bar code wont do much for most consumers. i think theyre just trying to cover their ass in more ways than one.

like i said, unless dell is making special UPCs for this specific burner (which i cant see why they would) i dont think the UPC would be an issue. and i believe the 4 bar codes coincide with the 4 models (one internal, one external, one beige, one black)

I ordered on the 29th, shipped on the 30th (after being estimated at 10/11 for a ship date), so things look promising.

If all else fails I'll just walk over to their headquarters and kick a$$ until I get my $50 back!

I'll know more after the package arrives Tues or Wed of next week.
