Saw this deal on Techb@rg@ins and just finished ordering the Plextor CDRW. This is for the NEW Plextor 12x10x32 CDRW for SCSI interface. It replaces the Plextor 12x4x32 model. I only saw this drive at a couple of places, Computer4sure and NECX for $299.99 and $329.99. Other places either are out of stock or doesn't carry this model. I believe this drive has Burnproof technology but don't quote me on that. You can get this drive at buy.com for $298.95 - 30 coupon. My total was $297.54 with tax and shipping. People living outside of CA would probably get a better deal.

Does anyone know if Plextor's going to use the improved Burn-Proof on the ide version soon? Also, can anyone recommend a relatively-inexpensive SCSI interface card to go with the Plextor?

The drive uses Ultra SCSI interface. I sold my Adaptec 2940UW card for $50 shipped so I'm pretty sure you can find another card like that amongst us Anandtechies! I believe the Diamond Fireport 40 is relatively cheap but I'm not use how well it works with this particular drive.

I searched shopper.com and buy.com using combinations of Diamond scsi and Fireport and came up with nothing. Any help?

Improved burnproof? Exactly how do you make something that doesn't burn coasters burn fewer of them? I have the IDE version, and I do have a SCSI UW controller from adaptec. I wouldn't choose the SCSI version because of being able to give it away to family when a DVD recorder comes out. I am sure the SCSI version would require less of the CPU, but with 1 ghz processors, who cares? How many here play quake in 7 minute shifts so they can keep their burners going? I can browse the internet or just about anything else I want to while burning a disc in 7 mins. I don't see how it gets much better than that.

I'm not quite sure on this but I thought they discountinued making the Diamond Fireport 40's. I like the SCSI since everything else in my system is SCSI... I agree that the IDE version is good enough, there are alot of die hard SCSI fans like me that just can have nothing but SCSI!

Jamey, calm down.
Perhaps the improvement is not to make it "more burnproof". nealh mentioned "a smaller gap 2-5 microns vs 40 micron". I read a similar post recently and I don't even remember which forum. The improvement can be on many aspects like reliability, noise, compatibility with different brands of media, compatibility with different brands of cd players and/or cd-rom drives, heat reduction, etc.

buy.com mentions this CDRW comes with software and media? Maybe I scored a retail version on the drive? That would be great if I did since I would think at that price it would be OEM.

Just to let you guy/gals know Plextor makes both EIDE/SCSI with the burn proof tech..the scsi drive is plextor's new's drive with the added. If your a scsi user this drive is great.

Info For ya!

Where does BURN-Proof name come from?

Restart Recording
How Burn Proof Drives avoids Buffer Under Run Error?
Immediately after the recording starts, the micro-controller inside the CD-R/RW drive always monitors the status of the buffer. When the drive judges that a Buffer Underrun Error is about to happen, it suspends recording at the appropriate location of the EFM (Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation) pattern.

While the drive stays in suspend mode, it continues trying to receive data from the host PC to fill-up its data buffer and subsequently prepares itself to restart recording by accessing the end of the previously recorded area (EFM pattern).

jimmygates,

Good post. Let us know what shows up at your door, OEM or Retail, and what all was included with the package (software, media, cables, etc.). Thanks.

I'm very interested in picking up the IDE version of this drive if I can find the right price. If anyone knows how to get this baby down below $200, let me know.

Thanks,
The Vicious One

EDIT: The best price I could find is $239 (@pricescan)

If I was going to buy one, I'd go through www.hypermicro.com . They have the retail kit for $245 and shipping is $7. They also carry the SCSI version of this drive for considerably more. Check the ratings of this company on resellerratings.com, they are about as close to the top as you can get.

Did anyone else notice that the SCSI version has a 4mb buffer and the EIDE has a 2mb? Interesting.

Using CD Architect I can burn a cd while surfing the web in one window and playing a game in another. I could do this with my Plex IDE without Burnproof and did it for a year with an HP 8100 IDE.

The best deal I could find was Onvia.com. They had it for $249 with a $50 off $200, I mieed that by 1 day. I did the Buy.com 259-$30 and then had them price match a place that had it for $230. So it was 230-30+7=$207. I thought that was a pretty good deal. This will be my first IDE burner.

MustISO, did you call Buy.com after you'd already placed the order with them to pricematch? Or did you use the form on their web site. I though Buy.com changed their policy and would only pricematch the bottom-line price. For example, they would say you used the $30-off coupon so you paid $229 at Buy.com, which is already lower than the $230 you found somewhere elde.

I've got the IDE version of the 12x10x32 drive and its both fast and reliable. My advice: I wouldn't got out and buy a SCSI controller just to get the SCSI Plexxy. IDE is fast enough without the extra cost. I can fill at 80min CD in about 6 minutes. You're paying more for the drive and an additional SCSI controller. Not to mention any other costs if that controller were to die. Unless you have too much money to spend, or you already have a SCSI system, I'd stick with the IDE.

MustISO: I missed the Onvia deal to get it down to $200 by about seven minutes! I am bummed. But, hopefully I'll be able to find something even better soon.
