I can burn on my Plextor 8x2x20 SCSI at full 8X without problems, even multitasking (like burning, having some other applications running AND playing quake3). I use Nero Burning ROM 5. It uses system RAM as an additional buffer - I think 32MB of system RAM. This means that it won't work well if you don't have much RAM, but I have 256MB so no problem there.

I would definetely agree that if you don't have an SCSI controller card, you should go out and buy the SCSI Plextor w/ a extra SCSI controller. IDE will be more than sufficient for your needs. I on the already own a Adaptec 29160 SCSI card so I opted for the SCSI version. I paid top dollar for the card so might as well get devices for it to use!

hkchan, I have an Adaptec 2930U2 Ultra2 SCSI controller that I'll let go for $100. It cost over $200 new. It has a little more power than you need, though.

It has a 50-pin Ultra SCSI connector (for the plexwriter) and a 68-pin Ultra2 connector. The Ultra2 connector is compatible with Ultra160 hard drives.

I've also got the Plextor 12x IDE drive. I've had the drive for a couple of months and not one coaster yet. (This thing is wild, I've tried to screw one up. This drive will just stop in the middle of a burn and wait for the buffer to refill.) The Plextor 2000 software mentioned above includes EZ CD Creator 4.0. The software can convert MP3's to CD Audio in a single-step, Explorer-type interface. Awesome Drive and Software

DONT FORGET to goto plextor's website and get the firmware upgrade for this cdrw. I have the ide version, had like 2 coasters with cdrwin or discjugglers, but it still rocks.. Their have been like 4 firmware upgrades, so get the latest.

Hey guys. I forgot to mention. The retail kit I got includes CDR and CDRW media! The cdr is from Taiyo Yuden and is marked 16x on the front! The CDRW is from Verbatim rated at 10x. Good deal!

there's a new 30 off 150 for returning customers floating around now... go for it guys... but... I'm hearing that the newer Plextors does not support sub channel (DAO and SAO) writing because of a new chipset. And that the new TDK Velocd does? Can someone clarify on this? I read it on tech bargains.com (no space) a little while back, but can't seem to find it anymore...

From the site you mentioned:

TDK VeloCD 28-Oct-00
Buy.com has the TDK Velocd 12x10x32 20x Audiorip for $258.95 - $30 coupon = $228.95. (Thanks Jens) Burnproof drive. This drive supports sub channel (DAO and SAO) writing. The 12x/10x Plextor does not (not anymore, new chipset!)

Plextor doesn't do Disc At Once and Session At Once anymore or do they mean something else? That's hard to believe.

the plextor still supports everything it did. it's just a compatibility problem between clonecd and plextor manager software that lead people to that assumption.

So if you don't install the Plextor Manager software then clone CD works 100%? Just wondering because I have a 12/10/32 sitting here waiting to be installed.

I burned a cd with CloneCD. I checked their website first for comptability and it notes that the drive is fully support. So far, the CD runs great. No problems so far. Plextor is definetely not suck

The Ricoh MP9120A has the best specs and features of any of the 10/12/32 drives out there. I was 2 micrometers away from buying the Plextor model but with Ricoh's DVD-ROM, better burnproofing with JustLink, and faster transfer speeds on everything except DAE (which is admittedly slow) this drive does it all. I'm selling my DVD and CDR drives and getting this puppy, unfortunately, the best price I was able to find was in the $280 range shipped (Pricewatch.)

Anyway here's the StorageReview.com review of this thing. Seems to be the best all-purpose drive out there right now.

BTW anyone seen any good deals on 10x CDRW media out there? I know it's new, but I can only find it on one site (Ricoh's site) and it's real expensive.

Are you talking about re-writing? I didnt think there were 12X re-write drives out there yet.
