My first attempt at a hot deal.. please don't hurt me

Amazon has the 40x12x40 Plextor for $80.74 in the GoldBox, minus the $10 coupon floating around and you have it for $70.74, w/ free supersaver shipping. Searching pricewatch for '40x12x40' yields $77.95 shipped as the cheapest price.

I own a Plextor 48X. Smooth burns, but I don't feel it was worth the price.

about half the volume for one. lite-ons are loud. i've also found that lite ons have a tendency to spin the cd up to full speed almost all the time even when the disc is not being accessed - that reaaaaallly bothers me....

Nothing wrong with that. If you like to own Plextor, this is a good deal.
If you prefer Lite-ons, buy a Lite-on.

I have both right now (a Lite-on 40x, and a Plextor 8x scsi because it still rocks on and I can't sell for anything worth the trouble.)

And by the way - Lite-ons are a great buy. So they don't need little peckerheads coming into a Plextor Hot Deals thread and thread crapping.

Have a nice day.

The Lite-on 52x are loud, all the others are pretty quiet. However, Plextor does seem to be a tad quieter than the Lite-Ons.

I think as long as your Lite-On doesn't go kaput on you, then your fine. However, Plextor has an excellent warranty policy, very fast in RMAing stuff to Plextor.

Yeah I own all of them below at the moment.
1-40x Plextor
2-40x LiteOn
1-48x LiteOn
1-52x LiteOn-Loudest (stay away from the 52x)

I got my Plextor a year ago for $80 at compusa, you may want to check Plextor's website. They had rebates going on for awhile.

Geeez, Rio, relax.
I didn't see any thread crapping in here.
The closest thing would have been my post, and I said it was a good deal for a Plextor. I also contributed to this thread by pointing out that there are other brands that don't cost as much. IMHO, the Plextors and Lite-Ons perform equally well, but with one being a fraction of the cost of the other. I can see how some people might be annoyed by the loudness of the sound, as at first, I was surprised at how loud it while burning. Since the poster of the Plextor deal was relatively new (5 months), I was making sure he was aware that there are cheaper solutions out there. Maybe you forgot this is the "Hot Deals" forum.

Nonetheless, thanks, linuxthinker, for a good price on the Plextor. And, I'm sure you've noticed, before you buy one, you may want to consider alternative brands. Plextor is an excellent brand though. And, quieter than the Lite-on.

You're right, DrPizza. When I went back and re-read the posts, it wasn't as "crapping" as my first impression.

Apologies for any peckerheads who were offended...I mean, apologies for calling people peckerheads.

Can't you stack a coupon on top of this to make it a little hotter?

I've heard some stories of the Lite-on's being unable to get their full 40/48x speed at all times... is this just a rumor? (I saw it on epinions... yah... i know... not exactly the best site to be getting this stuff...)

i have a liteon 40x and a plextor 16x - they are both great burners, can't fault either of them, but i will say that my plextor is much quieter on a normal basis. other than that, the only reason i still have my plextor is that i have to burn karoake discs on a decently frequent occassion, and plextors are the only burners remaining that can do it, so i will not get rid of a plextor w/out buying a new one

umm...Lite-Ons outperform Plextors, buddy. Lite-On overtook them when the fastest burners were 24x. Liteons also do better sd2 and other protection copying.

Yup that's the real kicker here. As far as EFM encoding goes liteon is one of the best which is why it's capable of making a working 1:1 backup copies of games protected with SD2; something the plextor can't really do too well especially if you pit them against the latest SD2 revisions. Plextor does have good audio extraction speed and quality. However, the latest firmware revision for the liteon burners also improved their extraction quality as well.

I'm still using a 24x plextor burner and I'm actually kinda jealous of the people that got those 40x liteon's. I personally feel that the price premium for a Plextor isn't justified especially with all the competition out there offering a similar product for a much lower price.

I can't speak to the newer models, but the quality of the Plextor SCSI drives is unsurpassed. I have two of the 8X20 (CDR, no CDRW) and both of them just won't die or make a bad burn no matter what I throw at them. I also had a 4X Plextor, and two 4X Plextor CD readers with the caddies. They were fantastic as well - I never saw any of them die (ended up selling them).

In the end, I agree that Lite-on is a better buy for the money. But after owning Plextors, I can see why people buy the name. They are quality drives. If I ran a business, and I had to pay a technician to troubleshoot them, the Plextors would be the better buy. For myself, though, it's Lite-On.

what do you mean unable to get their full speed at all times? i'm not sure about this statement. if you mean, the lite-on is unable to burn at 48x (or whatever) the whole time, then you are absolutely right. if i am not mistaken, NO DRIVE burns at full speed all the way through. they all build up and only hit max speed at the end. i thought CAV burning was supposed to rememdy this, but i'm not sure.

if they mean the lite-on won't even touch max-speed, it is probably because of the new technology that auto-senses the max burning capacity of the media, and adjusts accordingly. i think Plextor has this feature as well, called Power-Rec or something. on my lite-on, some media i have which is rated at 40x will burn at 52x no problem. sometimes the lite-on will only let me burn them at 48x though, depending on the batch. i will tell you this, i only use cheap generic media from Fry's, $7 for 50 discs, and have never made a coaster, ever. that's how good current drives are nowadays, and i mean almost all drives of all brands are so much better today then they were even 1-2 years ago. sony 12x i bought 1 1/2 years ago costed $100 and buffer underruns all the time!

anyway, this is a good deal for a plextor. just bought my bro-in-law one cuz he a plextor-whore too lol.
