Lightscribe is something that's not so much going to replace, but intergrate with current laser technology. I don't see DVD burner prices dropping because of Blu-Ray, it's too far off. People tend to write off Lightscribe, but HP has a lot of companies on the roster who will be incoperating it into their future drives. It does have potential, and only drives up the price of the burner 5 or so bucks. Once the media is wide spread, and HP has advanced the speed, woo! If you don't want a Lightscribe drive, you can pick up a regular 16x DL for cheaper, since companies are going to be switching over to Lightscribe.
So, this is going to be a win win situation for the consumer.

While on the item page, copy paste the exact text below on the address bar.

javascript:fnAddItemToCartWithAccessories('1091099798424','6801641')

This will add the item to the cart ... then just select the "pickup at store" option.

Works fine (at least with IE) ... I just did it.

It's not working for me

I just talked my father thru the process and it works. The only bad thing is that the price is back at $129. But at $60, it's still a great deal.

I agree with QueBert's assessment but would emphasize the potential impact that Lightscribe will have on the market. Something important is about to happen here.

As an example, several weeks ago I was at the local OM picking up an external hard drive and saw they had a clearance sale on HP DVD burners. I shop at this store on a regular basis so I have had interaction with most of the clerks. No insult intended but these are not the brightest nor most technically astute people walking but when I asked about the HP drives, they knew about Lightscribe and that the units on sale did not support it. They then engaged in a lively conversation between themselves (one a woman in her late 50's and a younger male clerk, 30ish) about how cool Lightscribe was and how they were going to buy one when the price came down and media becomes available.

I think most major manufacturer's (especially top tier) are probably holding back release of Lightscribe drives in order to protect margins while clearing existing inventory. My prediction is, once Lightscribe drives and media start shipping in quantity, non-Lightscribe drives will only be found in the low end budget segment.

Bottomline, unless you are burning mass quantities of DVD's, Lightscribe is a very elegant solution and you will want one. Saying that, this is an excellent deal for the $. I already own a 716A and toyed with the idea of picking up one more to put into another system but have decided against it in favor of waiting for a suitable Lightscribe drive.

Go to File--->Open----->fill this scrip in open window. javascript:fnAddItemToCartWithAccessories('1091099798424','6801641')

edit: crashed with firefox but works with IE.

Never mind, the drive has been increased to 129.99 before any discounts. It's now 13$ (+tax) more than yesterday.

Lightscribe sounds neat, but my view is that its a GREAT chance to buy a DVD burner for those of us who really don't care much about labels. OTOH I am happy to wait until the next price drop.

Uhh, I don't think LightScribe is exactly gonna revolutionize DVD burners. It's a bell and a whistle.

It will able to print color, and probably produce a label in 5 minutes before this time next year. It might not revolutionize the industry, but since it's so cheap to produce, and easy to add to current technology. I don't see how it can't become an industry standard. I'm sure in 2 years all burners will come with it standard, even if most people don't end up using it, it'll be there

Same here. Got my BB rebate back quickly. Just checked my Pletor rebate again and it says "We have received your submission and it is being processed." I think it has said this for a couple of weeks now.

damn missed the rebate. I have an Emprex dual layer i bought for 50 bucks no rebates from Fry's in Houston.

I don't know if its the burner or what, but i cannot properly burn a dvd to play it on a stand alone. I tried sony and that works fine. i think its a piece of sheet.

So what are the top burners now, still NEC & Pioneer?

I thought it was said that they were much better than any Plextor offerings or did Plextor get a new burner out that can take on NEC/Pioneer?

+ Lightscribe needs special new discs, huh?

Even if we didn't stock up already, one can imagine cheap deals on non-Lightscribe discs are coming, so what are we going to do faced with old discs that may cost cents vs. new Lightscribe discs that cost (a lot more).

Is one Lightscribe disc worth two regular discs? How about five or ten or more regular discs?
