Yes, www.plextor.com announced the Plextor 716AL which is black in color and I believe has the same specs as the regular 716 except it is a slot load DVD±RW! WOoooooooT! People have been waiting for this for quite some time!

It's nothing new. Pioneer and sony have both made slot loaded cd burners in the past. Pioneer's first generation DVD was a slot loading drive. Slot loaders are nice but they cannot burn those 2.5 inch mini cd's like tray loading drives can.

EDIT:
Slot load does nothing for DVD burining and just adds unnecessary cost and complexity to the drive. Also a disc can get stuck inside the drive; It can be a nightmare to remove.

Slot loading is a cool feature, but I just don't trust it. It seems like every car cd player I've seen winds up scratching discs (which is why I'm hoping someone comes out with some sort of tray-loading car stereo--yeah, I know, pipe dream)

I have already seen one. They exist.

Well - I go the other way. I have used slot loaders on my two computers for about 4 years. I am now on my 5th car with slot loading CD and DVD players. Have never had a problem with any of them. They are more rugged than tray loaders, and in a car, much safer.

I have never suffered any scratches or disk damage from any of them. IMHO, that is much more likely to happen with one-handed fumbling with jewel cases in a moving environment.

The big disadvantage of a slot loader is in not using the 3.5-in mini DVD disk. It can be done, but it takes a special carrier.

I look forward to trying the 716AL.

I am aware of those. I had one back in 1991 and used it on those mini-cd singles (on or two songs). I am not sure if they can hold up to the high speeds of todays burners and players though, I think the disc may come loose.

Ooh, way back in 1991!

8cm CD singles were pop in the early 1980's but I suppose standardization on the larger discs was eventually cheaper even if they were mostly empty. Not sure if the 8 to 12cm adapters are suitable for high speed burning but that would be a minor drawback as virtually no one uses 'em anyway and if absolutely necessary could surely be done at reduced speed.

Anyhoo, the great advantage to slot loaders (presumably in this case) is vertical mounting for slim tower cases and of course if a tower is on the floor there is no tray to be accidentally wacked by legs, kids, dogs, etc. Although, by the same token it may be slightly more fiddly to insert a disc near the floor than place down onto a tray. But since it is Plextor it will be overpriced and unlikely that new models are quickly released to keep up with standards so I would prolly not build a system counting upon such a slotter.

Historicly Plextor has offer great support (through phone and Firmware), performance, and quality. I would pay the extra $20-50 they would ask for a drive based on my experience with them.

from the press release:

Pricing and Availability
"The Plextor PX-716AL DVD±R/RW drive will be available for delivery in April and lists for $169.00 USD. Discounts are available for OEMs and Systems Integrators."

Not misleading but 1 can be fooled when they peek @ the item where it states
Note: 6X DVD-R DL Available on March 2005
even though it means the Firmware. One thing I noticed about their last distribution of drives is that they are now made in China instead of Japan which concerns me a little ...

This is noting new, Pioneer made these for the PC a long time ago (3 or 4 years ago).

Uh, yeah it's new. I had pretty much every version of Pioneer's slot loading drives, but they were, DVD readers NOT writers. Apple has had slot loading DVD burners ever since they intoduced their DVD-R writers.

Wow, the list price is thrice that of a reg'lar competitive tray model. Even if the street price is only double it is muy hard to justify unless you reaaallly need one. The press release reveals the real target is kiosks and such, not Joe PC user, so I am guessing the price will remain exorbitant.

So, why would you want it? Just to be different (as in most people have tray loading dvd burners)? Seems like something more practical for use in a moving vehicle, not something to be preferred in a desktop unit.

There has NEVER been a slot-load burner before - this is the first. All previous slot-load drives for PCs were CD- or DVD-ROM drives (from Pioneer and AOpen under license to Pioneer)... I think Pioneer's patent on the idea must have expired, so now others can do it w/o paying a royalty.
. The slot-load burner may lack some of the propeller-head stuff that's on the other PX-716s so be sure it will do what you need/want before forking out the $$$s.

Slotloading DVD burners existed back in the era of the G4 Powerbook. Pioneer OEMed them out, IIRC - they also make a standalone slotload dual layer notebook form, the DVR-K04.
