Plextor or NEC DVD 8x?

I?m in the market for a DVD burner. I don?t know anything about +R or -R, but from what I read this seams to be the most for my money, Light-On 8x. It has fast DVD burning speeds and pretty quick CD burning capabilities. My questions are: Is light-on a reliable brand? And is it worth spending more on a more familiar name like SONY or Plextor? I've tried to Google some reviews but i can't seem to narrow it down.

Replying with a few reviews if you can find any would help. Personal experience is much appreciated also.

Lite-On has made wonderful Readers and CD-RW drives. However, many have reported problems with the newer 8X DVD +/- R models. The NEC 2500A is a bit slower, but rock solid, and <$100 at NewEgg.

I just ordered one, and I'm waiting for it to arrive. From what I hear, the Plextor is definately worth the extra money, but almost double the cost was tough for me to justify.

My $0.02

I found this Generic Brand and from what i hear Dual layer is worth the extra money even though the Discs arent available DVD9. should i get this generic thing or a +R 8x's? How big of a difference will this make?

i have run into a lot of oems that use lite-ons and also there are a lot of rebadged lite-ons out there. my personal experience is that they are as good or better than the sony's of the world. jmo

These drives are dual format (+RW, -RW), but not dual layer (DVD9) or have I missed some of the hardware releases lately?

this customer of mine wants to buy a dvd, rip and burn. I want to give him a cost effective way of doing this without loosing quality. Anything -200 dollars is worth it to him. Get him X-Copy and the Plextor or will the NEC do?

My vote is for Plextor this time around in the 8x range. Over at cdrinfo.com and similiar sites based on reviews the plextor is the best even better than pioneer, liteon (a personal favorite of mine with cdr burners), sony (I own the sony too and it is a nice drive but really sucks with a wide range of DVD media while the plextor burns everything I throw at it so far). Some difference are more important than others but plextor overall is the current best IMO based on personal experience and reviews.

Get the NEC-2500A for around 100-110 and let him know that you saved him $60 by gettting the "second-best" model on the market to tide him over until dual-layer DVD burners (back-up movies with zero compression loss) come out over the next year. Then get him a new Plextor later, which should last darn near forever.

I have a Plextor PX708A.. great burner.. does CD burning well too.. at 40x it's one of the fastest CD-R write speeds, and as you know.. 8x burning for +R media. it ALSO takes 4x certified media, and forces the burn at 8x if possible... very cool feature of the Plex... I have burned many 4x DVD+R's before at 8x and have yet to have a problem with them

great drive.

Personally I've had no trouble with the NEC. It burns my weird, cheap, generic media (Princo) and it burns all types of CD-Rs. So I'm very happy with it.

He has a 48x sony cd burner, so im not as worried about CD burning speed. Im going to leave it up to him on which one to go with. But thanks to narrowing it down to 2 solid burners.

Buy the NEC and get him free copy of DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. I wouldn't pay premium for Plextor and definitely wouldn't pay more to get LiteOn considering the flaky problems reported with their 8x DVD burners.
